Transgendered in America

In the media today, we hear of football players, celebrities and even pupils who are divulging that they are either homosexual or bisexual. In the TV show, House, one of the main characters, “Thirteen”, is a bisexual woman and nobody in the show treats her differently. However, there is one member group of the LGBT is still being represented poorly by the media. According to GLAAD, they are being depicted as villains, sex workers, and are still victims of offensive jokes. A friend I interviewed even claimed that people like her are the most looked down-trodden affiliates of the LGBT! This group is called transgendered. They are one of the most misunderstood and least respected groups in America today.

First off, according to isna.org, transgendered is defined as an individual who do not characterize themselves as one sex but another. Some Trans-genders feel that they are in the wrong body. A transsexual man is somebody with a male body who identifies as female; transsexual women are people who have a female anatomy but classify themselves to be male. A To illustrate, a transvestite is a man who dresses like a woman and vice versa. Genetics, the prenatal environment, and life experiences are all major factors in transgender identities. In 1980, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) declared that transsexuals had gender identity disorder. Recently, they changed it to gender dysphoria, which is the persistent feeling the individual is in the wrong body; gender dysphoria does not pertain to all transsexuals while gender identity disorder did.

...law. This law concedes the right of transgendered students to use bathrooms based on their gender identity. They can also participate in sports based on their gender identity too. The opposition contends that this bill may create unnecessary awkward situations for both males and females.

All in all, a transgendered individual is defined as someone who does not identify with their biological sex, rather, they identify as another gender; it is not a mental disorder. Transgendered people are portrayed in the media as either molesters or insane killers in television shows and political advertisements. Despite the seemingly insurmountable problems the transgendered community faces today, there is progress for transgendered rights being made in places such as California. They can surpass the stereotypes and criticisms like many oppressed groups before them.
