Transcendentalism Day
During Transcendentalism Day, I went the whole day without using technology and ate a vegetarian diet. This was something very new for me because usually every day I go on my phone and check my social media and eat meat. During the whole day I had to mentally remind myself not to go on my phone because that be breaking the rules. I had to challenge myself to try on the coat, which meant going a whole day without technology, which was something new for me. At first I thought I was going to hate this and thought the day was going to last forever, but this day actually had its benefits. When i arrived at school all my friends surrounded me while on their technology, I decided to go into a learning support classroom

Usually if I saw all my friends on technology I would gather around them to see what they were looking at, but instead I was able to do some studying. This same experience also happened during my free bell. I was able to get some homework done that was due over the weekend instead of just watching tv on my phone. While not being able to use technology during the day I realized I focused on my school work better. During lunch I was not allowed to eat any meat. While I usually just got chicken from the cafeteria, I decided to pack my own lunch. I packed myself a salad, carrot sticks with ranch, and water. I realized that I rather pack my own lunch than buy food at the cafeteria because I'm able to mix up what I eat every day, and I can save my family money because I won’t have to buy lunch every day. During the day at school I realized I got my school work done quicker without using technology and that I rather pack my own lunch …show more content…
Usually on our drives home we listen to music and he falls asleep because he is exhausted from the day. I told him i was not allowed to listen to music, and at first he was a little mad but then accepted it. Not listening to music was a lot better because I was able to have a long conversation with my little brother about how his day at school was. I was also able to tell him how my day was also. I enjoyed this a lot better than him just listening to music and then eventually falling asleep over time. Later that day for dinner my family and I went to Red Robin. At Red Robin they have the best burgers, but I had to be a vegetarian. I decided for the first time to try a veggie burger. Once the food came I was a little scared to try the burger, but it was actually really good. Now when I go to Red Robin I might get the veggie burger more often. When it got later towards night I usually would watch some Netflix to help me fall asleep, but instead I decided to go out with my brothers and sister and go to the mall. By the time I got back I was exhausted because hanging out with my family for a long time can be a little draining. Instead of just watching Netflix that night I got to spend quality time with my brothers and sister hanging
In this essay, I will compare the philosophies of transcendentalism and anti-transcendentalism through the writings of Thoreau and Emerson vs. Melville. In Thoreau’s excerpt of “Walden”, he tested the transcendentalist philosophy through experience. Emerson’s transcendental writing style is displayed in “Nature”. In Melville’s excerpt of Moby Dick, he exhibits anti-transcendentalism in his work.
Transcendentalism is based on the belief that institutions in the society corrupt an individual’s purity. Transcendentalists believe that people are at their best when they are truly independent and self-reliant. They also believe that from independence and self-reliance, a true community is formed. Even though Transcendentalism is not recognized, it still exists in the modern society. Though not clearly outspoken as in Emerson and Thoreau’s times, many people in today’s society still have transcendental beliefs. Transcendental ideals are found in songs, films, books and other works such as media and advertisements. One example is the song “Get up, Stand up,” by Bob Marley, it is found to be influenced and has inspiration of transcendental elements such as Solitude (individuality), self-reliance, non-conformism (anti-institution), anti-materialism, nature and spirituality.
Transcendentalism A whole month of being nice. From the start, I didn't think it was even humanly possible. Although I always try my hardest to be pleasant, I'm sarcastically witty by nature. This project, no matter how inspirational and uplifting it could be, would decidedly be no walk in the park. Nevertheless, I decided to persevere.
Modern day transcendentalists are not easily found anymore in society. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what a transcendentalist is. By being your own self, following your own standards and being yourself, you become transcendental. By looking at the Robertsons’ way of life, they would make a tremendous example of modern day transcendentalists. Their religion, love of nature, and individualism create a transcendental lifestyle.
Transcendentalism is a movement that practiced morals that were seen as unorthodox. Two of the major premises that shaped the life of a Transcendentalist were the presence of God in nature and empowering individualism. Both of these tenants proved their importance by continuing to influence modern society, life, and thought. These influences have demonstrated to provide a positive impact. They have led to both advancements and reform unto which have improved our way of life. Without these valuable principles, this modern era would not be where it is at today.
Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been hundreds of thousands of books published by many different people on the ideas of people in the past and the present. Transcendentalism falls in amongst all of these ideas. There have been articles, essays, poems, and even books written about this subject. Transcendentalism has effected many people since the philosophy was first introduced. The idea was complex and hard to grasp for many commoners and therefore it was understood by few people, and some would think that the idea was not understood at all and that was part of the idea. Henry David Thoreau once stated about himself, “I should have told them at once that I was a transcendentalist. That would have been the shortest way of telling them that they would not understand my explanations” (Reuben 1).
According to the New York Times, teenagers listen to an average of 2.5 hours of music in a singular day. The messages coming through in each song may vary between drug/alcohol reference or transcendentalism. No matter where there is music, there is a lesson to be learned through ideas that Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau created. Though transcendentalism is a relatively foreign word to most, it can be defined by using five i's: individualism, inspiration, intuition, idealism and imagination which are displayed on all platforms of music today. The different music genres may vary between music from the late 1990's and children's movies today.
Many people walk and don’t even look up anymore. Riding the bus today has become a very silent ride. You have people listening to music, checking emails, statuses, and other social network sites. You can’t even get a simple hello or how are you doing like the old days. Even in classrooms students can’t put away their phones . It’s as if they can’t live without it. They are so attached and fascinated by people’s tweets or Facebook posts that takes their focus away. Mainly the reason why many students fail a class is because if your teacher sees you using your phone, it shows that you are not serious and your focus is not there .We have something called self-control and if our society learns how to put their phone down and live life ,they can realize the beauty around them .Technology wouldn’t take over our
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. The New York Times explains how social media affects children’s behavior and academics, and how the concept of dating has been altered while Louis C. K. explains how the 21st century takes little things for granted and YouTube channel charstarlineTV shows how daily activities can no longer be done without the use of cellphones.
Along with technology being a distraction, it can also cause students to be less social.
Though being exposed to technologies like computers from an early age may have given us the ability to do things more efficiently, technology has also made us less dependent on ourselves. Claudia Wallis, editor for Time, in her article makes known in The Multitasking Generation, “That level of multiprocessing and interpersonal connectivity is now so commonplace that it’s easy to forget how quickly it came about. Fifteen years ago, most home computers weren’t even linked to the Internet” (63). There are many things that students are able to do on their computer that their parents aren't even aware of or that the parents couldn’t do themselves. My parents always tell of how looking through the library’s card catalog and searching for the books they needed only to find out that they have been taken out. Computers have allowed us to do many things faster for example, write much faster than a typewriter or pen and paper and correct typing errors without starting over. The computers and technology we now have makes it easier to almost anything and with technology so easily at your fingertips it o...
The past two decades have overwhelmed the human experience with technology, along with all its distractions. The direct relationship between the mind and the body’s ability to adjust from these distractions can be extremely difficult .Further research has shown that it has become an addiction for many. Technology has significantly improved our lives as a whole through experiences such as Global Positioning System (GPS), cell phones and social networking allowing us to communicate with different people around the world. These technologies make our daily lives easier and more efficient. However, this also discusses the effects of technology on various aspects of our everyday personal experiences both with each other and with the world around us. On the other hand technologies such as cell phones have become a problem in getting students to focus in class and distracting drivers and thus, resulting in vehicle accidents. Technology is beneficial, but can also become an inescapable distraction in our lives. It is important to view technology as having the ability to make our lives better or worse, yet also as having the ability to change our personal lives and behavioral patterns.
Technology is a vast body of knowledge in which it is used to create tools, develop skills, and to collect materials. Technology includes anything that can improve your life overall. The most used technology in today’s age and time is the internet. Mark Griffiths, Ph.D. in Psychology, states that the internet has become a space for individuals to freely communicate with others who share the same interests at little or no cost (217). In 1973, communication overall went to a greater level with the creation of the mobile phone. Cell Phones have made it possible to keep people in touch while there on the go. Over time cell phones have evolved at such a fast rate that they now are capable of using the internet which was once limited to your desktop computer. When I walk down the street I constantly see people walking with their phones up and their heads down looking at the device in their hands. Adolescents are very guilty of these actions. Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, states that the internet can be used as a “safe space for the personal experim...
Older generations would tell stories about how the technology one now has, did not exist in their days. Currently, it is something one cannot live without; especially for students who use their laptops for registering online for classes, written assignments, taking notes in Word documents, doing researches now that databases and libraries are available online, and viewing the PowerPoint slides along with the professor when he is lecturing. Because personal laptops are not being monitored, professors have little control of what a student is doing on their laptops while sitting in his or her classroom. An article by Carrie B. Fried entitled, In-Class Laptop Use and Its Effects on Student Learning, she stated that out of the participating surveyors that she surveyed, “64.3% reported using their laptops...
... computers are a great invention if used with discretion. I use a computer almost every single day to aid me with homework, chat with friends, or even entertain myself by watching a movie or playing a game. I find computers to be a stress-reliever, a ‘gateway to another world’ where one can be whoever they want if they find that they’ve had a bad day at school or work. While I support this positive attitude towards computers everyday, I find, in myself even, that I’ve become slightly addicted, causing me to not get as much sleep as needed or allowing me to do my homework without distraction. Overall, however, I’ve found computers have made me more knowledgeable, even if not pertaining specifically to school and that they’ve prepared me for a future where computer use will be inevitable.
