The purpose of this chapter is to expand further understanding on the area of training and performance based from different views from different authors. It would further explain the training that has been implemented in Tesco Corporation for their employees. Due to Tesco is a British international grocery and general merchandising retail chain therefore provide training and development opportunities to employees is the way to increase performance in their workplace.

1.1 Training and development

Training and Development is the learning process for helping employees to develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge, and abilities in order to increase performance of the employees. The focus of all aspects of Human Resource Development is on developing the most superior workforce so that the organization and individual employees can acheive their goals in service to customers (Adiele Ndunuju, 2009).

Tesco corporation offers employees both on-the-job training and off-the-job training to increase employees performance. On-the-job training methods that Tesco corporation include are shadowing, coaching, mentoring, and job rotation or secondment. On-the-job-training (OJT) is one of the training methods for the employee at the place of work while he or she is doing the actual job during the training session. A professional trainer or an experienced employee will serves as the course instructor, and employs the principles of learning often supported by formal classroom training (BusinessDictionary, 2010).

3.3 Important to future researcher

Training and development is very important for the researchers on information seeking. Over the last few years, researchers have embraced new technologies and services that allow them to discover, locate, gain access to and create information resources on their desktops. However, there is evidence to suggest that research information skills have not kept pace with rapid change in this area. This raises important questions about how researchers acquire the appropriate skills in information handling, and the take-up of the training and development opportunities provided, therefore, training and development may helps the researcher to develop their skills in conducting their research (Sarah, 2009).
