Shakespeare is famous for his plays and one element that is common throughout his plays is tragedy, his plays deal with some kind of tragic event and more often than not have an unhappy ending and most commonly involving the main character. The play Hamlet is not much different, in this play Shakespeare illustrates the story of the main character Hamlet who comes back from his university studies to the death of his father, but he soon discovers that it was not a normal death and he goes on a mission to avenge the death of his father, thus resulting in a tragic downfall for himself. Even though this play revolves around the downfall of Hamlet, along the way the tragedy of other characters is shown as well and as Arthur miller states, tragedy can occur to the average man and is not restricted to important figures, mostly the kings.
During the course of his path to revenge, Hamlet caused many other characters to go through ordeals that they would not go through normally. One must look at all the other characters and how they are affected by his actions, one character that also suffers tragically is Hamlet's ex-love interest, Ophelia. Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius and the ex-girlfriend of Hamlet, although her story is not focused on during the play. She is a great example of a common tragedy. Firstly, Ophelia is living in a society which does not promote women independence, so unlike Hamlet she does not have the freedom to change her fate with her own decisions. She has to be obedient and listen to all the men in her life such as her father, Polonius and her brother Laertes and this limits her to doing things that she thinks are right. She believes that Hamlet is the right man for her and is set on marrying him but she ...

So through Gertrude tragic death it is evident that tragedy can occur to anyone and that the tragic hero does not always have to be the king as is shown by Arthur Miller's views as well. This shows that everyone has a tragic flaw no matter their status in society.
Although the main tragic story that Hamlet shows is that of Hamlet, there are many other normal everyday characters who also go through these tragic issues and eventually lead to their downfall and unhappy ending. We see this through Ophelia and her tragic flaw of being so obedient, with Polonius and his flaw of being too nosy and Gertrude's of being oblivious. Tragedy is something taht the reader comes to expect from plays like these and they cannot help feel pathos for the characters as they go through events that lead up to their eventual downfall.
