Montana is a state that has a lot of economic growth related to tourism. If tourism in Montana were to stop, the financial detriments that would impede citizens in all cities would be exponential. Because Montana is considered a tourist attraction to many other states, Montana has increased tourism awareness through multiple, different advertising venues. Tourism can be compared to other economic growth factors such as trade goods, food products, and automobiles. [?] Without each of these major industries countries like the United States would lose a considerable amount of revenue each year. Tourism can be defined as the activity of traveling to a place for pleasure, but it is also described as the business of providing hotels, restaurants, entertainment, etc., for people who are traveling. Both definitions are important to understanding why tourism is important. Whether traveling for work or traveling for pleasure, it is still an act of tourism, because whether for pleasure or business travelers are spending their money in other cities, states, countries economy. There are three major benefits that come from tourism, economic, socio-cultural, and environmental. Environmental threats that are detrimental to Montana’s economy are the biggest threat for a negative tourism persona. This is because Montanans have a lot of pride in the state. When outsider come in and destroy parts of the state or disrespect the state this can be seen very negative and causes a lot of issue for the locals. Montana is in so many ways such a great state to live in, with a wide variety of recreation, hobbies, and other enjoyable pastimes; however, many problems plague the state, from its lack of modern conveniences to its poor job opportunities. What many people do not realize is how much these good and bad characteristics are related.
Colorado was viewed as a place to visit and live in because of the climate, scenery, and promise of good health to its people (Abbott, Leonard, Noel, 2013, pp. 227). Tourism in Colorado has evolved immensely and has helped form Colorado into what it is today. Before anyone could realize Colorado’s potential as being an iconic tourist place, in the 1860s, journalist began to view Colorado differently. They began to notice Colorado’s scenery and they slowly recognized Colorado’s potential for evolution and development through tourists and travelers (Abbott, Leonard, Noel, 2013, pp. 223). Many people sought good health while they were sick and since the journalists really started to see the value of Colorado, they really made its climate stand out and become more appealing to those who were sick, mentioning the great benefits the climate would have on poor health. One-third of the state’s population consisted of people that were once sick (Abbott, Leonard, Noel, 2013, pp.229).
Montana today is place that is still very similar that of a hundred years ago. Ranching and farming out east, mining still goes on in Butte, fishing is big along the western rivers, and now there is a new boom, with oil and natural gas throughout the state. As John Steinbeck said, “I’m in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love. And it’s difficult to analyze love when you’re in it.”
Tourism impacts can be generally classified into seven categories with each having both positive and negative impacts. These impacts include; economic, environmental, social and cultural, crowding and congestion, taxes, and community attitude. It is essential for a balance on array of impacts that may either positively or negatively affect the resident communities. Different groups are concerned about different tourism impacts that affect them in one way or another. Tourism’s benefits can be increased by use of specific plans and actions. These can also lead to decrease in the gravity of negative impacts. Communities will not experience every impact but instead this will depend on particular natural resources, development, or spatial patterns (Glen 1999).
Since moving to Hawaii approximately two months ago, one might assume that this would be the perfect place to study varying environmental influences and their impacts. Hawaii is one of the most inaccessible, yet populous places within the United States. Tourism is a main reason why so many people come to the islands.
