Totaliterainism found in Animal Farm
George Orwell¹s story, Animal Farm, is a satire of Soviet Russia. In a more general sense, however, the story traces the rise and fall of any totalitarian regime. All of the animals on Animal Farm somehow contribute to either the creation, destruction, or temporary success of the totalitarian government. The original goal of the Animal Farm society is a socialist society, but it turns bad.
As the animals begin the Animal Farm society, everyone is equal. As time passes, it is realized that of all the animals, the pigs are the smartest. This is slowly the beginning of Animal Farm moving froma socialistic socoety to a totalitarian society. Snowball and Napolean are two pigs who are constantly arguing over issues; they compete for power. Snowball is a good speaker and can easily persuade people, whereas Napolean is not a very good speaker. Napolean was jealous of Snowball, and he was power hungry. One day, he had his nine enourmouis dogs chase Snowball off the farm. Now Napolean was in complete control, and he made it seem like he was putting a hardship on himself by doing so. Squealer was sent around and said, ³I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napolean has made in taking this extra labor upon himself. Do not imagine, comrades, that leadership is a pleasure!² (69) It was here that the shift to totalitarianism became rapid.
Aside from the pigs and dogs on Animal Farm, the other animals were not that smart....
George Orwell's goal in writing the novel Animal Farm was to portray the events surrounding the Russian revolution that took place in 1917. Orwell's tale of Animal Farm is seemingly a story of how a group of farmyard animals plot to overthrow their owner and seize control of the land. The novel seems to be a simple story, however Orwell wrote this book as an allegory, a story that has a clear secondary meaning beneath is literal sense. Everything in Animal Farm is used to represent people and events that took place during the Russian revolution from 1917-1939. Orwell chose to represent Russia's three famous leaders during this time with three pigs. Each three are drastically different and have dissimilar beliefs. Snowball representing Leon Trotsky, Napoleon by Josef Stalin and Old Major by Karl Marx. Orwell wrote this and many other books as warnings. The warning is that people must change their ways, or we are most surely doomed.
Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel based on the lives of a society of animals living on the Manor Farm. Although the title of the book suggests the book is merely about animals, the story is a much more in depth analysis of the workings of society in Communist Russia. The animals are used as puppets to illustrate how the communist class system operated and how Russian citizens responded to this. And also how propaganda was used by early Russian leaders such as Stalin, and the effort this type of leadership had on the behavior of the people of Russia.
Animal Farm is a novella by George Orwell based upon the rise of Stalin and Russian Revolution and references heavily to authoritarianism, fascism and dictatorships although never referring to them directly.
In many real and fictionalized totalitarian societies, children live apart from their families. I believe that dictatorial leaders enforced this living arrangement because they don’t want parents to influence their children, to make sure people are loyal to the society, and to maintain everyone equal. They do this so that they have total control over their society.

George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm is a great example of allegory and political satire. The novel was written to criticize totalitarian regimes and particularly Stalin's corrupt rule in Russia. In the first chapter, Orwell gives his reasons for writing the story and what he hopes it will accomplish. It also gives reference to the farm and how it relates to the conflicts of the Russian revolution. The characters, settings, and the plot were written to describe the social upheaval during that period of time and also to prove that the good nature of true communism can be turned into something atrocious by an idea as simple as greed.
The animals stand under the scorching sun, their legs aching from harsh labor and stomachs growling from starvation. The pigs loom over these creatures, their stout bodies upheld by the hind legs and their crackling whips by the hooves. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel that uses these animals to express the corruptions of a totalitarian government. Published on August 17, 1945, this allegorical tale criticizes the Stalinist era in Russia and its unjust regime. In Animal Farm, Orwell utilizes symbolism to develop ideas about how corruption is often brought on by absolute power; through the use of symbolic characters, and various events, he illustrates how powerful individuals are subjected to immorality and tend to manipulate others to
Animal Farm is an allegory of the period in Russian history between 1917 and 1944. It is a satirical story written in the form of an animal fable. In writing Animal Farm as a fable, George Orwell is able to present his subject in simple symbolic terms by treating the development of communism as a story that is taking place on a single farm with talking animals. The characters of Animal Farm represent figures in Russian history during the Russian Revolution. Places, objects, and events of the Russian Revolution are also symbolized in Animal Farm.
Most directly one would say that Animal Farm is an allegory of Stalinism, growing out from the Russian Revolution in 1917. Because it is cast as an animal fable it gives the reader/viewer, some distance from the specific political events. The use of the fable form helps one to examine the certain elements of human nature which can produce a Stalin and enable him to seize power. Orwell, does however, set his fable in familiar events of current history.
Animal Farm, a book written by George Orwell, is considered to be one of the best allegories ever written. One of Orwell’s goals in writing the book was to portray the Russian Revolution of 1917, which resulted in having a government that was worse than the one overthrown. Orwell uses a farm overthrown by animals to compare to the Russian Revolution. He makes the characters and events of Animal Farm almost identical to those of the Russian Revolution. In Animal Farm, Mr. Jones represents Tzar Nicholas II, Old Major represents V. I. Lenin, and Snowball represents Leon Trotsky.
The novel, “Animal Farm,” published in 1945, was written by George Orwell, an English novelist, essayist, and journalist. Animal Farm is an allegorical and political satire novel that is based off the events surrounding the Russian Revolution in 1917. In this hardcover, the animals on the farm dispose of their leader Mr. Jones after ages of mistreatment and unjustified actions. Ran by the pigs, the farm’s most intelligent animal, the farm continues to do their usual business. As time progresses, the pigs start to become more dominant and hungry for power. Eventually they become as their predecessors the humans, corrupt and power hungry. Napoleon and his manipulation, Boxer and his naiveness, and Squealer’s behavior demonstrate how both the
This story Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel about an animal revolution over an oppressive farmer. The irony in the story comes when the pigs turn into the very thing revolted against. They exhibit the same cruelty by treating the other animals the same or even worse than previous owners. This cycle of cruelty is shown in the Russian revolution by Joseph Stalin who is represented by Napoleon in the story. Cruelty in animal farm is shown by the human’s treatment of the animals, and the animal’s eventual treatment of each other and the ironic characteristics of the two.
Squealer, using excellent scare tactics and under Napoleon’s control, acquires the pigs the power to control the decisions made on the farm by giving the animals daunting thoughts of a farm gone array due to their flawed decision-making. He dispels the idea of Snowball’s loyalty to animalism by saying that if the animals would have followed Snowball, Jones would have returned and if the animals do not choose wisely whom to trust, the humans and Snowball will return. By cleverly inducing fear into the animals, the pigs are able to convince them to agree with and support anything they suggest. The pigs in George Orwell’s Animal Farm use specific laws, use unknown vocabulary and excruciating detail, implement scare tactics, and create and manipulate laws to successfully attain the other animal’s trust, acquire certain luxuries unavailable to most animals, and establish themselves as the dictators of a totalitarian-like society. Through using detailed, unknown vocabulary, specific laws, and scare tactics, the pigs acquire the ability to drink alcohol, sleep on beds, eat and drink the milk and apples, destroy Snowball’s credibility, and establish a trust between themselves and the other animals.
This is being shown in the novel because the animals are taught to read and write, the farm had a voting system and the seven commandments. To start off, in Chapter 3, the animals were taught to read and write, this was to teach the younger animals that were introduced later into the novel and then they could develop their education and so on, until all the animals started to act like humans because of the way they were acting and doing tasks. Secondly, the animals were forced to vote for a leader, which is what every human over 18 has to do, because they have to vote for a leader to lead our country, this is shown in the novel, as Napoleon is voted for leader and then takes control of the farm as a leader would. Finally, in Chapter 2, there were rules set by the leaders of the farm, these rules are exactly like laws in our society as we have to follow laws to not do thee wrong, if we do break any of these rules we get punished, this is what happens in the novel because any animal found breaking one of the seven commandments receives a punishment, punishments were usually death or no food for a certain amount of time. It is shown in this paragraph that the animas were treated as human beings, because of the things that the pigs had ordered them to do was very humanly. The animals were learning how to read and write, they were voting for the leader of their farm and they had commandments and rules to
