There are various models or methodologies to choose from but the decision has been made to discuss Lean manufacturing which will help reduce costs by narrowing down processes and eliminating waste. Within the organization of Pearson, there are several departments that can incorporate Lean manufacturing to get rid of waste and improving processes or procedures among the departments. Managers and employees would have to have a common understanding on Lean manufacturing that would work. In further description, Pearson will be able to understand the importance of adding this process to the strategic planning. Since there are various departments at Pearson, a good description of Lean manufacturing that may need some assistance, it would be Quality Assurance. The Quality Assurance department will be targeted for this strategic planning initiative.
Quality Assurance of Pearson is a department that focuses on a customer’s requirement by checking all data (reports and files) that is being delivered to the Department of Education including each individual district. The Quality Assurance managers take every measure to ensure the quality checks are valid and identifying potential risks that may hinder results from being delivered on-time. There is a few problems that can hinder an employee from functioning well especially if there desk is cluttered with lots of paper, perhaps old papers from years ago. The first step to resolve this issue is to identify the problem as to why the employees keep all this information on his or her desk. The lean manufacturing will help Quality Assurance in reducing the waste that can be eliminated. The employees would be able to operate better than ever especially reducing a customer’s complaint.
According to Alukal.G, “Lean is a manufacturing philosophy that shortens the lead time between a customer order and the shipment of the products or parts through the elimination of all forms of waste”. (2003, para 2). Quality Assurance will be able to get rid of all the extra papers and remove objects from his or her desk to make sure there is enough room to work on his or her reports. By lean being in process at Pearson, it will help also reduce cycle times and unnecessary situations that may arise. A continuous improvement is always a good strategy to implement because employees will never know what can arise in the near future. The goal with this lean strategy process is to have to buy-in from upper management team in order to move forward with the improvement initiative through various departments.
