Thanksgiving Day is a day of family, food, and giving thanks for the blessings in life and yet some people believe Thanksgiving to be a prep day for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The focus of Thanksgiving shifted from family bonding to incessant shopping. This trend of taking away from the hours of Thanksgiving in order to shop is enraging. It steals away from family time for the shoppers and the employees. Employers threaten workers that if they do not work on that certain holiday, they will be fired. Black Friday should be kept to Friday instead of moving in on my family time. The whole culture of Black Friday has become repugnant and unnecessary.
In “Another Holiday for the Prince” by Elizabeth Jolley the author draws upon many themes, one in particular that Jolley illustrates is how poverty influences changes in the individual lives within one family. To begin with the head of the family; a father is never mentioned in the story, not even once. But by not having a father figure in the story the reader can understand a lot. In society the man is the one who earns the money and provides all the essentials for his family, however this story is presented in a society were the mother has to be the man of the family. Ones self-esteem can be diminished as a result of poverty, alienation; destructive effects of a week personality or society on the individual. The author effectively conveys this theme through the use of characterization, symbolism and contrast.
As December approaches the air all around becomes filled with the smell of Christmas. Without thinking, people get out their trees, put up their decorations, and start buying their gifts. To do all these things is normal; almost a force of habit. These habits are customs that people look forward to and treasure. For some, though, holidays have deeper meanings. They hold a deeper meaning, and are sacred and pure, in a way. To them, they have deep religious roots that span over generations and generations. What most people do not realize is that their beloved holidays often have pagan roots, and unpure beginnings.
We acknowledge the existence of both Holidays, and how they are celebrated in different states in the United States, but do we really know the difference between the two Holidays that makes them so significant that they impact everyday living? One of these Holidays is Halloween we know and love, and if you don’t know what Halloween is, well is a Holiday which was celebrated during the Celtic Festival of Samhain. Halloween was originally created for the people to dress up as monsters so they could scare of unwanted ghouls who only bring trouble like killing crops and such, as well as going to door to door asking for food in exchange for the people providing food would pray for the ones who are now deceased. In modern times Halloween is celebrated as the end of fall, and the coming of winter. Now the
Little Johnny had a hard time waiting for Christmas to come. On Christmas Eve, he wrote Santa a letter before going to bed. He said: Dear Santa Claus, thank you for coming to my house to bring me Christmas gifts. When you come to my house, I hope my dog does not bark at you. There will be milk and cookies for you on the dining table. But if you are still hungry, you can use our cell phone and order pizza to go.
My Christmas break was fun. My cousin and I had went shopping at the mall the money we got for Christmas; that’s all we asked for. My mother, stepfather and brothers and sister came down to Jackson from Memphis; I live with my grandmother.

...religion is different but there are many similarities about each religion that is not evident in our everyday lives. This course allowed me to understand more deeply why things happened for us to be living on the earth today and also how it happened or got us to this point. Faith is a very big part of my life and this just made it enhance more and stronger because I was able to understand certain concepts more than I did before and not just hearing what I have heard in church I actually know now why they did it and I am clearer to how it was done. Even though they are many different views and faiths that is why our world is diverse and it a good thing because if everyone only believed in one faith there would not be much difference and that would make us not as connected or interesting amongst one another.
Summer and vacations are synonymous, especially with my family. Does Chevy Chase and summer vacation ring a bell? With a family of six, anything is possible. There are two types of excursions that we take every year. I refer to one as my family vacation and the other as my family trip. My family vacation to the beach is an annual event, but my family trip destination is always different. This past summer my family and I went to Wyoming. Both experiences were the highlights of my summer but for very different reasons.

American holidays have been around ever since the Mayflower made its long voyage overseas. Many of the holidays that we celebrate today have originated from holidays from before America even existed. Even though the historical figures that holidays are for, as well as the beliefs holidays are based upon are slipping away from Americans’ minds, holidays should not be eliminated from the calendar. This is because they have shaped and are continuing to shape American culture, and they are all cultural and/or historical events.
