Career episode 1: Flood modelling in Drayton area – Toowoomba
1.1. Introduction
To complete my Masters in Integrated Water Management, I am required to complete a final project which calls for the application of what I learnt during my masters and my engineering background. Since November 2016, I got selected for a flood modelling project with Dr. Dana Kelly of Toowoomba Landcare Group. I am to take full responsibility to deliver a flood plan to Toowoomba Landcare Group and Council. My role consists of technical meetings with Council, study of a dry gully of 3 km long and come up with an erosion plan, a drainage plan, and a planting plan which are to be presented to Council by the end of the project.

Secondly, my duty is to train with the required software and get the models done, considering engineering fundamentals and statistical references. Finally, my duty is to analyse the resulting models so as to produce a drainage plan and a flood risk management plan taking into consideration social, environmental, and economic implications. It was a first time for me, so I had to do some extensive readings and selective research taking into consideration the environmental situation of the study area. After collecting solutions and ideas, I came up with an adaptive framework to incorporate the elements into a comprehensive plan. The framework I created was inspired by a water management scheme in the State of California and a European Union Water Framework Directive application I encountered a few years ago. By combining the two frameworks, I got a plan that took into consideration four aspects: society, environment, economy, and legislation. To validate my framework, I needed the help of Dr.
