Tootsie Roll was founded by Leo Hirshfield a who was originally from Austria, and moved to New York City to start a candy shop. Hirshfield wanted to grow his candy business and merge his candy business with a candy manufacturer Stern & Staalberg. In 1922 the company was name Sweets Company of America, and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 1948, William Rubin was named the company president. Rubin put a lot of focus on marketing and advertisng for the company. The company marketing campaigns consisted of magazine adverstisements, and television commericals featured on classic childeren programs such as Howdy Doody Show, and the Mickey Mouse Club. The company prospered under Rubin’s leadership, and the demand for the candy consistently increased each year. Rubin had a daughter name Ellen who married Melvin Gordon.
In 1962, Melvin Gordon became CEO and continued to lead the company on a path of success. In 1966, under Melvin Gordon’s leadership the company changes its name to Tootsie Roll Industries, Inc. Milton didn't quit because he didn't like the apprenticeship. No, he quit to start his own confectionary business. Milton S. Hershey gave this world a company that changed the way we see chocolate today.
In 1954, some investors made an attempt to bring back the Tucker Corporation to make a new car. They made many sketches, but was not able to get enough support to build the vehicle. The former Tucker Corporation is located in Chicago, IL, and is now split into the corporate headquarters of Tootsie Roll Industries and the Ford City mall. Tucker’s innovative ideas for his new car design with safety helped build up the standards for the modern cars today.
When the Great Depression hit, he lost many customers, so he had to work on smaller items. These items included miniature models of stepladders and ironing boards, and this, inspired him to make toys. In 1932, Ole Kirk’s shop started to produce wood toys like wooden pull toys, piggy banks, pull toys, cars and trucks, and houses. At first, he didn’t make too much money since it was during the Great Depression. Did you know that farmers traded food for some of his toys? He also made yo-yos, which was a big fad until it became un-popular. Instead of getting rid of the leftover yo-yos, he used them for wheels for cars and trucks. Later on his son Godtfred started to work for him.
Vermont Teddy Bear Company was founded in 1981 by John Sorinto selling hand sewn bears out of a pushcart in the streets of Burlington, Vermont. Since this time, the company's focus has been to design, manufacture, and direct market the best teddy bears made in America using quality American materials and labor.
In the novel, “Of Mice and Men”, Candy is one of the main characters, who symbolizes some major themes. He is the oldest worker and his job as a ‘swamper’ who cleans the bunkhouse. He has spent majority of his life in the farm, working for someone else. He also has his dog, his best friend. He is usually described as “careful” “shuffled” and “slow”. This shows that he is a very slow and thoughtful man. Candy symbolizes several things about America in the 1930s.

My personal leadership style as an outward demonstration of the values that I hold most dear. Being that my personal leadership style is a melding of the values of Spirituality, Family, Leadership, Learning, Trust, Responsibility and Accountability, leadership for me is who I am. I want to use who I am to develop and inspire others, establish long-lasting relationships, and be recognized, trusted and respected for my planning and decision making. My mission in life and in work is to make a difference in the lives of others by living, leading, caring and sharing. I will use every learning and experience in my Capella journey to build on the leadership skills I currently possess.
