A Pitchers Worst Nightmare The surgery that every pitcher has a nightmare of having is Tommy John. Tommy John surgery is one of the biggest surgeries in the sport of baseball. The most common players to have this surgery are pitchers. This surgery has made many players become more mentally and physically tougher and realize that you will never know when the last time you might be able to throw a ball. The first Tommy John Surgery happened in 1974 by an orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe. Just this past season in 2014 there were 29 pitchers that had Tommy John Surgery (Tommy John surgery Wikipedia). The first person to have Tommy John surgery in 1974 is Tommy John from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Tommy John was a left-hand pitcher who is one of the best lefties of all time. John is one of the top eight left-handed pitchers to have the most wins. Dr. Frank Jobe was the orthopedic surgeon who did the surgery. Although Jobe did the first Tommy John surgery, he did the first major reconstructive shoulder surgery in 1990. After the Tommy John surgery, Jobe then went to the Dodgers with John and became the team's physician until his death in 2014. John and Jobe had a great friendship between them. After John's amazing career after the surgery, the two were on 30 for 30 on ESPN documentary together (Tommy John Surgery Wikipedia). Tommy John surgery has not changed through the years. The patient is on antibiotics to prevent infection. For a full result and return, the patient will have to take several months to a year for strength and range of motion to return. As some pitchers and other main players might have to take up to two years off to make sure they are the way they were before they had Tommy John surgery. Physical Therapy is a must after surgery. After returning home, most of the patients will have an exercise program for gentle range-of-motion. There are three different stages of rehabilitation. The first stage for a pitcher is gentle motion exercises while wearing an elbow brace; after 6-8 weeks, the second stage is elbow strengthening exercises; and the third stage is to start tossing a ball and gradually working from the mound. Professional pitchers will take up to nine months to a year to play again while position players will take six to nine months
