F. Scott Fitzgerald 's novel, The Great Gatsby, tells a story about wealth, love, and the complications that come with them. The 1920s was a time of prosperity and the boom of new technologies. The goal of every man was to get wealthy and find a beautiful woman to settle down with or have an exciting life. Gatsby for instance isn 't the normal type of person to do that. The differences in lifestyles between Tom and Gatsby make the novel unique and interesting. Gatsby was young when he left home, but now he is wealthy, elegant, and famous for throwing parties. A star athlete, brute of a man, and abusive, this is Tom Buchanan. Tom is already very wealthy and has his magnificent bride, Daisy. Goals for Tom may be whatever he wants them to be and he needs to put forth little effort in achieving them. Being as wealthy as the Buchanans must get very boring. "They had spent a year in France for no particular reason, and then drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together." (6) Having so much money and getting the opportunity to do whatever a person desires must eventually become dull. Tom needs to find something else to give his life a little more excitement. "Tom 's got some woman in New York." (15) Tom has everything a poor man would kill for, but he is not satisfied with what he has, so he looks for excitement.
