Together we can feed the world

925 million people are living today without any breakfast, lunch or dinner. Day after day, they starve without any food. The worst part is that we don’t have enough food to feed the world today so how will we be able to feed the world in 2050 if the worlds population is supposed to grow by 7 billion people?! The world’s population will grow from 7 billion to about 9.6 billion by 2050 and food production will have to increase by 70 percent.

Hunger is the most pressing issue we face. One out of every eight people in the world today suffers from chronic undernourishment caused by food scarcity. 19,000 kids die everyday from hunger. The world has more than 1.5 times enough food to feed everyone on this entire planet although with some people making less than two dollars an hour, it is hardly imaginable to be able to. At least the number of people who die everyday of famine is going down every year because more and more people care. We want to keep this number going down not only by the year, but also by the day. If we want this to happen, we have to take action. Now.

Our first solution is New Delhi, India. India's wheat and rice production can be increased by over 60 percent, sugarcane production by 41 per cent and cotton production by 73 per cent. The best part of this solution is that we don’t have to cut down trees or forests or we don’t even have to increase farm area! Basically, in over 157 countries, including India farms are not producing their capacities. Most importantly, in India, a study found that in wheat, the current yield was 2.49 tonnes per hectare (tph) while it could go up to 3.98 tph if proper fertilizer and water is provided. Similarly, rice yield could increase from 2.88 tph to 4...

...ds, which allow us to grow using between 50% and 90% less water than a comparable farm not practicing recirculation. Since we recirculate 100% of irrigation water, our greenhouses don't load the municipal drainage system and our plant nutrients don't end up in lakes and rivers.” If more cities use this method then we will have more water, which can be used to grow more crops to feed the world!

In conclusion, there are many possibilities to feed the world in 2050 but it will only work if everyone works together and put their minds to it. Soon enough, hunger will become an even worse problem that the world will have to face. It wasn’t easy to do something like Lufa Farms did but Lufa was amongst the ones who decided that we no longer could go on like this and they took action. Hunger is a big problem but the even bigger problem is that no one wants to face it.
