In this modern age of sex dominated pop culture we tend to focus on the negative impact on our young girls, but what about the young men? In today's society a young man is faced with over sexualized content every day. From images of their favorite celebrities to music on the radio, sexual content is virtually inescapable. To be labeled a virgin these days is a blow to a young man’s social standing rather than an admirable decision to save himself for marriage. There is not nearly enough focus on bettering our young men to ensure the term gentleman, defined as a chivalrous, courteous, or honorable man, will live on to the next generation. It is time we take an active approach in educating these boys that sex is not all that matters; young men need to know that the over sexualized state of our generation leaves them vulnerable to STD's, unplanned parenthood, and emotional damage.
STD's, or sexually transmitted diseases, are an increasingly serious issue for our young people. Studies show that by the age of twenty, 75 percent of Americans have lost their virginity (Langan p.671). The pressure to be sexually active outweighs the desire to be knowledgeable about the risks involved with multiple sex partners. Many sexually transmitted diseases are incurable and some are even life threatening. Contrary to popular belief sex is not the only way to contract a sexually transmitted disease. Mononucleosis for example, can be transmitted simply by kissing or even sharing a glass of water. Herpes can be transmitted by rubbing, kissing, or touching even if the infected partner currently shows no signs or symptoms of infection. In conclusion, a much better system for sex education is needed now more than ever. Our current society will be the downfall of the gentleman if allowed to continue down the path we are on now. Our young men are being targeted by the media as the predatory sexual species and women are views as little more than conquests. The time is now to educate young men on the issues at hand such as sexually transmitted disease, unplanned parenthood, and emotion damage. The minds of young men are meant to be shaped into upstanding gentleman, not warped into a false sense of sex being all that matters.

Since the HIV/AIDS epidemic began in the U.S. in the early 1980s the issue of sex education for American youth has had the attention of the nation. There are about 400,000 teen births every year in the U.S, with about 9 billion in associated public costs. STI contraction in general, as well as teen pregnancy, have put the subject even more so on the forefront of the nation’s leading issues. The approach and method for proper and effective sex education has been hotly debated. Some believe that teaching abstinence-only until marriage is the best method while others believe that a more comprehensive approach, which includes abstinence promotion as well as contraceptive information, is necessary. Abstinence-only program curriculums disregard medical ethics and scientific accuracy, and have been empirically proven to be ineffective; therefore, comprehensive sex education programs which are medically accurate, science-based and empirically proven should be the standard method of sex education for students/children in the U.S.
Many people don 't realize how important sex Ed actually is. Sex Ed should be introduced at an age that teens understand what is being told to them, but where they would also listening take it into consideration. In a story I read called “Sex Ed” by Anna Quindlen I read how she was surrounded by six sixteen year old girls at a table who knew a lot about human sexuality, but she was very surprised because despite their knowledge about sex they were all pregnant. While I was reading this story it made me more knowledgeable of how little people think of sex. Especially when in a relationship.

Sex education does not appear to be growing more comprehensive with time. Sex education books continue to omit crucial information. They confuse children, (and sometimes even teens,) with cryptic descriptions and diagrams. Feminine and masculine stereotypes, while not acknowledged in any constructive way, are strongly perpetuated. Sex education materials, such as those cited above, fail to provide comprehensive sex education.
In today’s school systems, students are taught the basics: math, history, language arts, and science. However, what they are also “taught” is sex education. Currently, when people think of how they were taught sex education in high school, most would say something along the lines of that they were taught the anatomy, and they were taught to never actually use it. From a young age, children are bombarded by images of the rich and the famous engaging in torrid public affairs or publicly discussing their increasingly active sex lives. No longer is sex education left to teachers and parents to explain, it is constantly in our faces at the forefront of our society. Regardless of sex education curriculums and debates about possible changes, children and teenagers are still learning everything they think there is to know about sex from very early on in their young lives. However, without responsible adults instructing them on the facts about sex, there are more likely to treat sex in a cavalier and offhanded fashion. The problem, as I see it, is that we have not re-defined masculinity for the modern age. In the old days, masculinity was measured by (1) physical abilities, particularly strength, but also skill, (2) power/success/wealth, and (3) sexual prowess. The first can be developed through education and hard work, the second could be acquired through the application of the first, and the third, well, either you got it or you don't, but locker-room bragging can always make up for any lacks, especially if you got the first two. Boys growing up in such a society work to develop their physical abilities and learn how to apply them most efficaciously, thus becoming a "man". This makes sense when a man might be faced with the challenge of building shelter on the prairie or raising crops, but us modern urban men are unlikely to face such challenges. Of course, we are not unprepared for the challenges of a modern urban lifestyle. Our education generally provides such life-sustaining skills as linear algebra, the performing arts, and information systems management. The educational system is successful enough to allow most of us to get jobs that pay us enough to afford all the requirements of a modern urban lifestyle: housing, food, clothing, entertainment, transportation, etc. The trouble is that while education has more or less kept pace with the advance of civilization, our notions of masculinity have not.

Today it is no longer a novelty to hear that teenagers are having sex. However, while this “bedroom” activity may be fun, there are now ample reports indicating that rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in teenagers have skyrocketed. Current data reveal that nearly 25% of adolescent girls who have sex are infected with one of the four commonly sexually transmitted infections-namely gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes and HIV (Kann et al, 2015). Nationally, the prevalence of STDs account for 50% of cases in people under the age of 25. While every ethnic and race has been known to be affected, African American youth are disproportionately affected. These data are not a surprise to professionals who are engaged in adolescent sexual health because the numbers have been slowly creeping up over the decades, despite national educational policies to counter the threat of STDs (Sales & DiClemente, 2016). All the STDs have a significant impact on sexual and reproductive health, if they are mot promptly diagnosed and treated. In the United States, there is a rising problem that is not going anywhere anytime soon, that is if we, as citizens, don 't change it. This problem is causing billions of dollars and people 's futures all because schools would rather teach ignorance than the truth. What’s the problem? Sex education. Although sex education may not seem like a rising conflict, it is actually one of the top controversial topics in our country regarding education.
