The meaning of being human is often questioned and argued by almost everyone. Of the many mysteries that surprise and delight us, understanding what makes humans human, is the most common and compelling. But what do we, as human beings, consider a human to be? Some say that humans, in comparison to animals, are self-aware, possess feelings, and contain flaws that make them imperfect. Others believe that being human means to have faith in religion or a higher being. There is not one certain way to justify what it means to be human since every individual has his or her own beliefs. To be human is to be able to have your own beliefs in spirituality and morals. Spirituality is a major factor for many people when deciding their morals. Spirituality can have various definitions, depending on who is asked. It can be something as simple as looking for a higher meaning to life, or something so complex that one can base their beliefs, religion, morals and overall life around it. According to the Oxford Dictionary, spirituality can be defined as “relating to, or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.” You can find this sense of spirituality in almost everything. Finding spirituality in something can make an individual feel enlightened and bring strong emotion and deep feeling. In comparison to the Oxford Dictionary, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that spirituality is “the quality or state of being concerned with religion or religious matters.” There is not one sole definition for spirituality because every individual has their own beliefs on what they think is spiritual. Religion is taken into great consideration, when deciding morals for many people. Many Muslims believe that the righteous are able to see visions of God after death and that the wicked see visions of hell. Except for these possible visions of heaven or hell, Muslims believe the soul remains in a kind of "soul sleep" until Judgment Day. When the Day of Judgment arrives, everyone is judged according to their deeds in life. Many Muslims believe that non-Muslims can attain heaven only after a period of purification in the fires of purgatory. Spiritualism says that all people and animals that have been loved such as pets, continue to live after physical death. On crossing over we take three things with us: our etheric or spirit body, all memories and our character.
