In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by the late Harper Lee reveals the characters Atticus Finch the prominent defense attorney for the county of Maycomb, Alabama. He has two children Jeremy “Jem” Finch and his daughter Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Atticus is representing a black man chrged with rapeing a young woman named Mayella Ewell. The white patrons of this community dislike that a white man is representing a black man.Thesis Statement:Through the portrayal of the actions demonstrated by the community toward Atticus Finch and his children, Harper Lee indicates that the community can not accept a white defense attorney representing a black defendant. Atticus was having a conversation with a townsperson named Link Deas. “Link that boy may go to the chair but not till the truth is told(166).” Atticus has some suspicion that no matter what Tom Robinson will be found guilty of rapeing Mayella Ewell just because the color of his skin. When scout and Jem were up in the colored person section at the courthouse “I shut my eyes Judge Taylor was polling the jury ‘Guilty...guilty...guilty...guilty…(240).’” I peeked at Jem: his hands were white from gripping the balcony rail, and his shoulders jerked as if each “guilty” was a separate stab between them. The jury had a unanimous decision for Tom Robinson to be found guilty based primarily off the color of his skin and that mostly everyone who testified against him was white and the jury believed a white man's word over a black man’s word. Mrs. Dubose was making accusations about Scouts future and atticus was getting laughed at by the community.
