9-Week Critical Analyses To Kill a Mockingbird The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird was Maycomb county Alabama. The books main plot was based in the time period of 1933 to 1935. This was a significant period of time in history because it was during the great depression. Also, during this time the Jim Crow laws(the laws restricting African Americans from there rights)were still in effect. Maycomb is a very small quite town were everybody knows each other. The story takes place before the civil rights movement and some of the characters are racist. The plot of this story is that there is a small town called Maycomb county that is suffering through the great depression in the 1930s. He was the father of Scout and Jem Finch. Scout Finch she is the narrator of the story. She like to play outside with her brother and is kind of a tomboy but she realizes that the world is not always a safe and nice place when she grows and learns throughout the story. Jem Finch is Scouts brother and he is four years older than her. He and scout get into a lot of mischief throughout the story like sneaking out and observing Boo Radley there isolated neighbor. Boo Radley is the Finches neighbor that never comes outside of his house. Because of this the people and children make up stories about him and make him seem scary or mean. But in the end he ends up saving the children from Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell is the antagonist in this story that is falsely accusing Tom Robinson of raping his daughter. Calpernia was the Finches African American cook. She is a nice women that partly lived with the Finches. Tom Robinson was an African American field worker that was accused of raping Bob Ewells daughter. Tom Robinsons lawyer was Atticus Finch who attempted to have justice for
