Atticus is a major character in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. He has a set of rules which are more like a moral code that he wants his kids to follow. Atticus has a strong moral code that he follows with few exceptions. He is kind, calm, and formal ,but he is not strict. He is a good parent and raises his kids to the same set of rules he lives by. Atticus has many principles including his lenient parenting style, treating others with respect, and having mercy on everyone. Atticus has a very distinct parenting style. He treats his children like they are his equals, and he gives them all the respect he would if they were adults. He wants them to be respectful of others and to take other people’s feelings into account, and that others should be treated with kindness. He wants them to leave Boo Radley alone because he is a recluse and does not feel comfortable around other people. He does not like it when Scout, Jem and Dill play the Radley game. He sees it as rude. He does not like it when they make the snowman which makes fun of Mr. Avery. Even though everyone else in town is prejudiced towards black people, Atticus still treats them with respect. Atticus says “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life , but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it-whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes form, that white man is trash”(220). This quote shows that Atticus believes that all people are equal. Basically, Atticus thinks that people should just focus on themselves and not concern themselves with the matters of others, and that they should always be thoughtful and respectful to other
