Have you ever seen Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or Sleepy Hollows? If you have seen those, you should know, Tim Burton loves to keep his audience on their feet. Tim Burton has an impressive list of dark-themed and mysterious movies that are fans’ favorite. He uses many cinematic techniques to keep his audience thrilled with bone-chilling vibes. The creative use of his cinematic techniques are shown in movies such us Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands. One of the techniques that Tim Burton creatively put to use is lighting, which he used in order to set a mood or atmosphere. He usually uses these shots in order to deliver emotions of the main character to the audience and feelings that are unsaid. An example of his medium shot is in the film, Edward Scissorhands. When Edward was tucked into bed by Peg, he laid there while the camera only showed the upper half of his body, which is a medium shot. He laid there in his pajamas with darting eyes and hands rested in an uncomfortable position. The medium shot was used to show how Edward felt being in a new environment. Since he is a quiet character and doesn’t speak much, Tim Burton used medium shots to show how uncomfortable Edward felt being in an unfamiliar environment. Another example of Tim Burton’s use of medium shot is Edward’s first meeting with Peg. He emerged from the shadows and the camera filmed him from his waist up as he approached Peg. Without a lot of words, the audience could feel Edward’s fear and uncertainty. He was shown taking hesitant and careful steps towards Peg, showing his fear for the unusual. The cinematic techniques used in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands are prime examples of Tim Burton’s artistry. The genius behind our all-time favorite mysterious and eerie movie, cinematic techniques, play a big part in Tim Burton’s success.
