What makes golf the phenomenal sport it is today? Is it the game itself? Some say golf started in fifteenth century Scotland by men hitting a pebble with a wooden stick. Currently, graphite drivers routinely send the ball soaring 300 yards. Perhaps it was the golfers who made the game great. Arnold Palmer brought golf to the masses in the 1950’s and Jack Nicklaus has set records that have yet to be broken. However, today sports commentators, pro golfers, and weekend duffers, generally agree the game of golf has been changed forever with the arrival of Tiger Woods.

In June of 2008, he competed and won in the U.S. Open despite “sporadic pain in his left knee from arthroscopic surgery” (Tiger Woods. Biography). The sporadic pain could not stop him from playing the game he loves. His dedication kept him playing at his best. He ended up needing more surgery for his knee because he ignored his doctor (Tiger Woods. Biography). This stopped him from playing in any more tournaments for the rest of the season. Since he was unable to play for the rest of the season, he realized how much time he would be able to spend with his family and happily took the time off (Tiger Woods. Biography). He was able to do more with his wife such as enjoying each other’s company. He also had a one year old daughter at home named Sam Alexis Woods who he could spend more time with and watch her grow. In 2006, Woods’ father died of prostate cancer (Tiger Woods. Biography). It was very hard on him because he considered him not only a father, but a mentor as well. Despite this horrible loss, he continued to play golf. On the brighter side, the next year on June 18th, his wife gave birth to their first child, Sam Alexis Woods (Tiger Woods. Biography). One year later he had surgery on his left knee. He spent a lot of time with Sam Woods and still played his share of holes on the golf course. Two years later, he had another child, Charlie Axel Woods (Tiger Woods. Biography). Charlie Woods was born on February 8th, 2009.
