Thumb osteoarthritis treatment aims at preventing the further degeneration of the articular cartilage.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the joints. Any joint of the body can be affected including the thumb. Thumb osteoarthritis is more common in women compared to men. Usually, thumb osteoarthritis develops after the age of 40.

Thumb osteoarthritis mainly affects the joints at the thumb base, the fleshy part of thumb and near the wrist. However, the trapeziometacarpal joint (also known as first carpometacarpal joint) at the thumb base is the most common joint which is susceptible to degeneration.

Cause of thumb osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is also known as wear and tear or degenerative joint disease. Cartilage is a strong but flexible tissue coating the ends of bones in the joint. it is the carpometacarpal joint (CMC joint) at the thumb base which is commonly affected. It is the joint which bears lot of force during thumb movements.

The metacarpal bone of thumb joins the trapezium bone of wrist to form the carpometacarpal joint. The articular cartilage gets damaged resulting from fracture or bad sprain of the thumb. Any injury to the CMC joint, can affect the joint movements of the thumb even though the cartilage is not damaged.

If the injury leads to misalignment of joints, the wear and tear increases on that joint finally resulting in osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of finger osteoarthritis:

The common and primary symptom of thumb arthritis is pain. In the early stages, pain is experienced with movement. It becomes painful while opening the door, turning the keys or lifting the cup. With the progress of the disease, pain can be experienced even at rest.

Other symptoms of thumb osteoarthritis include:...

Thumb osteoarthritis treatment: Surgery

The following are the surgical options:

CMC joint fusion:

This surgical procedure is called as Arthrodesis. Here, the surgeon fuses the bones of the arthritic joint (CMC joint) permanently. The stability of the thumb is improved and the pain is also relieved with this surgical procedure. However, this surgery does not fascilitate the thumb movements.

Joint replacement (Arthroplasty)

Arthroplasty is an effective treatment for thumb osteoarthritis. In this procedure, the surgeon removes either part or the entire diseased or affected joint. a graft taken from your tendons replaces it. Plastic or metal prostheses are developed to replace the joint.

Trapeziectomy:

In this surgical option, the surgeon removes the trapezium bone adjacent to the thumb joint.
