There are three major stages of the prenatal development process. The Germinal Stage, Embryonic Stage, and the Fetal Stage. While most people think that the process of development starts after a baby is born, the prenatal period is very crucial to the overall development of a child. During the prenatal period very major things can go wrong, such as mutations or chromosomal abnormalities, which can cause downsyndrome and other diseases. The process of development begins at the very moment of conception. This stage begins around the second week and lasts until eight weeks after conception. As the cells divide and start to develop their own functions a process known as gastrulation takes place. Three germ layers form because of this process and they are known as the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. The ectoderm, which is the outer layer is responsible for forming the nervous system, skin, hair, nails, teeth, nose,mouth, anus, and other tissues. The mesoderm, which is the middle layer is responsible for forming the skeleton, muscles, circulatory and excretory systems. Finally the endoderm, the inner layer, is responsible for developing the lungs, pancreas,liver, and digestive tract. At around the third week major organs such as the brain, heart, and spinal cord are forming. Week four, five, and six other body parts start to form. Specifically around week four is when the baby’s heart will start to beat. Week six and seven things such as hair follicles and eyelids are forming. In these two weeks continual development of the brain and heart occur. Around week eight, facial features are becoming noticeable and most internal organs are well developed.
