Barry Brummett’s “Three Meanings of Epistemic Rhetoric,” describes three ways people interpret rhetoric and its relation to the truth: Methodological, Sociological, and Ontological. The methodological belief is that there is only one truth; rhetoric helps people discover this reality. The sociological belief is that there are both material and social truths; rhetoric discovers the material reality but also changes the social reality. The ontological belief is that there are infinite truths; rhetoric creates reality.
