Who is Thomas Jefferson?
“It is highly interesting to our country, and it is the duty of its functionaries, to provide that every citizen in it should receive an education proportioned to the condition and pursuits of his life”(“Jefferson on Politics & Government”). Thomas Jefferson didn’t care about money or if he’ll be remembered later on in life. All he cared about was the people around him and how to make his country a better place. Thomas Jefferson was the most influential person because of his Retirement, inventions, and politics.
At the age of 33 Thomas Jefferson and four other men drafted what would be the most important document in the United States history: The Declaration of Independence. Jefferson did get married to a girl named
Beth McMurtrie says “...He owned more than 600 slaves in his lifetime”(McMurtrie). All though he did own slaves he constantly tried to abolish slavery. Jefferson also “...wanted to reduce some of the more brutal means of controlling slaves, such as whipping,”(McMurtrie). Another thing about slavery is that Jefferson kept on “pushing back the due date, insisting that the time wasn't right”(McMurtrie) and he also said “He portrayed black people as both animalistic and childlike”(McMurtrie). Thomas Jefferson was a man who bought slaves as families so they wouldn’t get split up, he wouldn’t over work them, and only beat them once in awhile to get them back on task and so they wouldn’t think it’s a free for all. Jefferson “...saw to it that many of his own slaves were trained to become highly skilled craftsmen”(McMurtrie). The last thing against Jefferson would be the debt he was in. “...by the 1820s the interest on his debt was compounding at a faster rate than any repayment schedule could meet. By the end, he was more than $100,000-in debt”(Ellis). Martha his daughter after he died had all of his stuff auctioned off. The only thing that kept her family still going was thee donations given to her(Ellis). She survived after he left and still cleared his name from the debt. If it wasn't from her auctioning off the Monticello then we might have lost the historic house due to nobody keeping it
Jefferson all his life was just trying to improve on his community and make the country he lives in a best it could be. Having a good education, giving back when he was retired and coming up with inventions that would last a lifetime is all the stuff in which makes Jefferson a good guy, president, father, and husband.
