Succeeding Thomas Jefferson’s 1801-1809 presidency was Democratic-Republican, James Madison. As the fourth president of the United States, Madison stayed in office from 1809-1817. He had two vice presidents: George Clinton and Elbridge Gerry. Although Madison was from Virginia, his vice presidents were from New York and Massachusetts. Due to the rising British and French hostility in the 1810s, Madison declared war on Britain in 1812.
