Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, born in Virginia, is one of my favorite Civil War characters. His parents died when he was young, leaving him and his sister in the care of an uncle. He spent his youth working in his uncle's grist mill and secured an appointment to West Point through his influence. Jackson had a hard time in school; he was shy and awkward, and due to his backwoods education, started at the bottom of his class, having to compete against guys like George McClellan and other Ivy Leaguers. He improved his grades and started moving past less motivated classmates like George Pickett. He kept a book of motivational maxims he collected, one of his favorites was “You may be whatever you resolve to be”. He graduated in the top third of his class; some said if he had another year he would have reached the top. After graduation, he taught physics and math at VMI, a military academy in Lexington, Virginia, but wasn't a very good teacher. He would memorize lesson plans and recite them by rote in class; if someone interrupted to ask a question, he would resume at the start and repeat the lesson. Needless to say, he was a less than inspiring teacher. One thing he was good at was teaching artillery, a skill that would serve him well in the future. Things didn't come easy for him. He lacked the basic skills most teachers took for granted, but was serious and worked to overcome his limitations. He also lacked social skills; students made fun of his hypochondria and oddball quirks like holding one arm above the other, believing it to have therapeutic value. At the end of the day, he found comfort in his belief that God would provide everything needed in this world and that everlasting life awaited him in the next if he followed His ... ... middle of paper ... ...w Year's Day, but to align with the federal holiday, they combined King's with the existing Lee–Jackson holiday, until 2000, when Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore proposed splitting Lee–Jackson–King Day into two separate holidays after "debate" arose over whether the nature of the holiday, which simultaneously celebrated the lives of Confederate generals and a civil rights icon, was incongruous, subsequently, the two holidays are now celebrated separately, but equally, as Lee–Jackson Day and Martin Luther King day. Phew!, glad they got that straightened out. If they couldn't reconcile Lee, Jackson and King, then how do they expect us to get along and move forward? Speaking of holidays, why doesn't Lincoln rate a national holiday instead of getting thrown in with Washington on Presidents day? Besides Washington, who could be more important to this country than Lincoln ?
named after him. As readers we begin to learn the type of man that Jackson indeed
At present there are numerous regulations and restrictions on firearms imposed by the government. However there are no national mandated requirements or all encompassing legislation. The laws in place vary from state to state and are in some cases are poorly enforced. Hard evidence as to the effectiveness of these present regulations is ambiguous. The question as to how the government and society deals with gun control is unique to the USA. In a complex issue such as gun control both sides of the equation have valid arguments to be h...
He has an internal conflict because he wants to save money to buy back his grandmother’s regalia from the pawnbroker, but he also wants to share his money and he receives money throughout the story. “‘I’m hoping, and I don’t know why I’m hoping it, but I hope you can turn thirty bucks into a thousand somehow.’ ‘I believe in magic.’ ‘I believe you’ll take my money and get drunk on it’” (Alexie para 230). When he receives money, he always ends up spending it on alcohol and sometimes spends it on food. He never spends all his money on himself. Jackson has a man versus nature conflict and a man versus man made environment conflict. His man vs. man made environment conflict occurs when he is too drunk to find a good place to sleep. He ends up falling asleep on train tracks. An example of Jackson’s man vs. mother-nature, “’I was cold and sleepy,’ I said. ‘So I lay down.’ ‘You dumb-ass, you passed out on the railroad tracks.’ I sat up and looked around. I was lying on the railroad tracks’” (Alexie para 195). Jackson also has a conflict with white society. “‘One day you have a home and the next you don’t, but I’m not going to tell you my particular reasons for being homeless, because it’s my secret story, and Indians have to work hard to keep secrets from hungry white folks’” (Alexie para 1). Jackson also has a man versus man conflict with Honey Boy, who tries to get Jackson to hook up with him but Jackson says he’s not a homosexual. “‘I’m flattered, Honey Boy, but I don’t play on your team.’” (Alexie para 165). Jackson does not show any signs of complexity. He is also a stereotypical homeless man. He does spend the majority of the money he gets on alcohol. Jackson also is dynamic since he clearly changes because in the beginning he was just a homeless man with his friends with nobody really paying attention to him, then at the end he felt that everybody stopped to watch him
General George B. McClellan was born to a prestigious upper class family in Pennsylvania. He attended the Military Academy at West Point and graduated second in his class in 1846. He served during the war with Mexico and earned three brevets for gallantry and sound professional service. He resigned his commission but returned early during the Civil War and immediately given a high rank. He led a successful campaign in West Virginia. These events fueled General McClellan’s egotistical and elitist attitudes.
The best place to start is the beginning. The Jackson family immigrated from Ireland, leaving behind a world of hardships to try their luck in the New World. Life there would not be so easy and Andrew Jackson’s father would die before he was born. Jackson had two brothers, both older, and his mother. The worked on the farm on which they lived and it was not easy. Life would soon take a more difficult turn as the Revolution began. Historians say that some of the worst fighting seen during the war was experience right around where Jackson grew up in the Carolinas. This kind of violence that surrounded him surely influenced the man that Jackson became. His brother fell victim to the war and soon after his other brother and mother would die from disease leaving Jackson an orphan and forcing him to fend for himself. “A boy soldier during the American Revolution, he became the only president ...
At the head of this revival was the memory of Stonewall Jackson, closely followed by Robert E. Lee (who would rise to the prominent position following his death in 1870). Other generals of the Confederacy who had died during the war followed, as did those who would pass on later.
Andrew Jackson is one of the most controversial presidents. Many regard him as a war hero, the father of the Democratic Party, an inspiring leader, and a spokesman for the common man. While there is plenty to praise about the seventh president, his legacy is tarnished by his racism, disregard for the law of the land, cruelty towards the Native Americans, and ruthless temper. Jackson was an intriguing man who was multi-faceted. One must not look at a singular dimension, and cast judgment on him as a whole. To accurately evaluate one of the most complex presidents, it is crucial to observe Jackson from all possible angles. Prior lifestyle, hardships in life, political ideology, lifestyle of the time, political developments, and his character
Jackson wants to find something that will make him feel like he has done something for his culture and his people. These sayings contradict his actions because every time he gets closer to gaining more money, he spends it. In the long run, Jackson’s pitfalls did not stop his determination to gain back the regalia and ultimately find his personal identity. Given that he is Native American, the reader might assume that Jackson has a feeling of resentment towards white people due to the displacement of his people. From the beginning of the story, Jackson reveals a protective feeling caused by white people.
Just in the US there are over 100,000 people shot each year. 72 perecent of all violent killings use guns as the weapon. 40 percent of US homes have guns, 57 percent of people in which do have guns believe there should be major restrictions or a ban on guns. In January 2016, Obama announced new actions on gun control, these actions include an update and expansion on background checks. The Supreme Court held a collective right that to own guns is a purpose for maintaining a militia. There should be more gun control laws because it would help reduce the high rate of violent crimes. More laws need to be made to protect oneself from harm of others.
Gun control is a highly controversial topic in today’s world where the fight is between the liberal and the conservatives. Many people believe that guns should be banned due to many recent massacres that have happened whereas others are wanting people to have background checks done before owning a gun. I am against gun control because banning handguns in the United States should not be allowed because handguns fail to protect the people and it is ineffective.
There is an American consensus for some form of gun control. “…[F]irearms were involved in two-thirds of all murders in the United States and [t]he United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths…murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology” (Lepore). There might be some far extreme people who think that all guns should be banned but most sane Americans do not think that gun rights should be abolished. Americans regard self-defense as the most compelling reason to have a gun and twenty-two percent of households have handguns in the United States. However many people do think that gun control laws must be enacted and enforced. Pro-gun extremists and the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) must understand that there is a real for many people at the uncontrolled s...
Over the last decade, gun control has been one of the hottest political topics nationwide. Those who support gun control believe that stricter gun laws reduce crime, while opponents of gun control believe that firearms are essential for self-defense. Both sides possess passionate views, and are usually unwilling to compromise their beliefs. What exactly is gun control? Gun control is a series of laws that limit the availability and ownership of privately owned firearms. Cliff Stearns, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, claims that “Our society is a violent society. However, the innocent deserve access to the tools they need to defend themselves.” Gun laws should be relaxed in the United States because the 2nd Amendment prohibits the government from infringing on the right to keep and bear arms, a well-armed general population would deter the government from becoming abusive in the future, and finally, because access to firearms make it easier for people to defend themselves and their families.
Gun control has been a controversial issue for many years. A vast majority of citizens believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would quickly reduce the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of hunting. Americans have a constitutional right to own hand guns and stricter laws and licensing will not affectively save lives.
Well gun control, otherwise known as the firearms set of laws refers to the laws and/or policies that regulate the manufacture of sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. The Second Amendment of the Constitution is the heart of this wonderful nation we live in. This amendment states that the citizens of the United States have the right to possess and bear arm. Gun control has been a hard-hitting issue for the last couple of years. Guns are one of the most powerful weapons. They can cause destruction, harm, or even death. However, guns can also defend, protect, threat, and kill.
In America guns have been a part of the country since its birth. Throughout history, people of the US have used guns to protect our nation, their families, to hunt for food. The issue of guns and gun control takes on a fraction of problems in the world. Weighing the rights and liberties of individuals against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a risky balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these issues that has both sides firmly stated in their positions.
