They Never Knew

It was a dark and gloomy October 16th. The 5th graders at GreenHawk Elementary School were going on a field trip. It was pelting rain, dark gray clouds, and foggy air, but the field trip would continue. It was time to be let out of school and onto the busses. All the students packed their bags and started towards the exit. Suddenly, the lights started to flicker and a gray, face shaped figure, faintly appeared on the wall. “Don’t go”, said the figure. “DON’T GO”, it said again. The teachers just laughed and claimed it was a prank. But Eve, one of the students, wasn’t so sure. As all the kids continued towards the bus Eve looked back at the figure, but it was gone.

Her knees lost feeling. She felt her pulse in her ears.
Eve rushed to the prairie for the others help. The color drained from her face as she couldn’t believe her eyes. Everyone was walking around like monsters. Inside their mouths was a black tar like fluid that dripped down their chest. Their eyes were gray and lifeless. They all simultaneously turned their heads towards Eve. They trotted over to her as she dashed away. Eve headed back to the Lidtke Mill to see if the ghost was still there. She looked in the window and saw all the teachers lying on the ground such as when she had left. She did not see the ghost. She tried to open the door and they did. She walked in and the doors swiftly closed behind her. It was a trap. She heard an old, scraggly, voice from above. “You should have ran when you had the chance,” evil laughter struck.
Not a soul came back that day. Or the next. Or any time after that. The school was shut down, and most people fled for the hills. Others didn’t believe the story and stayed in their homes.
