Everyone of us has different ways of communicating with other people. It maybe how you communicate to your parents, will be different to your partner, children, friends or even to the strangers. Communication is something that most people do at some point each day, and is an important part of life especially in a working environment. Effective therapeutic communication is a great tool to be an effective health care provider like a nurse. When I did my clinical at the Heights, one of the obvious factor that I was concern was about a good communication. Communication is not only verbally but can be non verbal as well. Some of the elderly at the heights were non verbal and some who are verbal had hearing impairment. Verbal communication to them were sometimes hard, so I also had to use non verbal communication like body language, facial expressions, gestures and even just the tone of voice. Through using therapeutic communication skills, I was able to interact with each resident and was able to deliver the quality of care they deserved. Taking the time to listen to the residents and allowing them to express their feelings or concerns is an important part of establishing a nurse-patient relationship.
