Motivation comes from an intrinsic and external factor. Intrinsic values are sought after for personal goals and/or personal benefits. External values can include monetary worth, political or popularity gains. Within the educational system a person’s motivation includes various venues. Induction to education can aid in the steadiness of a teacher as a whole. A continuous influence of school environment can produce reliable and loyal teachers. Three theories of motivation is noted within the Human Resource Leadership for Effective Schools book: 1. Expectancy theory, 2.Equity theory, 3. Goal-setting theory. In education teachers are tied to their student’s success within learning. This would indicate an instrumentality within the expectancy theory. The Equity theory relates to teachers in the same position comparing themselves to each other; thus, can relate to performance as an educator. The goal setting theory can highly motivate teachers, internalizing the “self-leadership” (Seyfarth, p82-89, 2008). Teachers that feel appreciated and valued are willing to give forth effort and dedication. Developing a vision for the school that the teachers can buy in and get excited about with have them wanting to return to work. Having a safe and secure environment for teachers to express concerns to administration or leadership roles is a valuable way to create an all encompassing feeling of worth for a teacher when the concern is addressed and validated. I work on many different teams being an ESE teacher, a math teacher and a future leader within my school. I have established a good rapport with teachers and administration, I am able to address teacher concerns with the most applicable person and find a ways to improve form suggestions of
