Motivation comes from an intrinsic and external factor. Intrinsic values are sought after for personal goals and/or personal benefits. External values can include monetary worth, political or popularity gains. Within the educational system a person’s motivation includes various venues. Induction to education can aid in the steadiness of a teacher as a whole. A continuous influence of school environment can produce reliable and loyal teachers. Three theories of motivation is noted within the Human Resource Leadership for Effective Schools book: 1. Expectancy theory, 2.Equity theory, 3. Goal-setting theory. In education teachers are tied to their student’s success within learning. This would indicate an instrumentality within the expectancy theory. The Equity theory relates to teachers in the same position comparing themselves to each other; thus, can relate to performance as an educator. The goal setting theory can highly motivate teachers, internalizing the “self-leadership” (Seyfarth, p82-89, 2008). Teachers that feel appreciated and valued are willing to give forth effort and dedication. Developing a vision for the school that the teachers can buy in and get excited about with have them wanting to return to work. Having a safe and secure environment for teachers to express concerns to administration or leadership roles is a valuable way to create an all encompassing feeling of worth for a teacher when the concern is addressed and validated. The biggest question educators face in today’s classroom is what motivates a student to do something and why? Virtually all students are motivated in one way or another. Research of student motivation suggests a theory that emphasizes a social-cognitive perspective. The cognition of students regarding academic work are influenced by social factors, such as messages from the teacher about the difficulty of the task, the perceived abilities of classmates, and the information about the importance of learning the material (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). In this paper the focus will primarily be on those elements within the classroom that influence student motivation and engagement.
Motivation is to understand what causes behaviour, what starts the behaviour, why a person does something and why the behaviour stops and what are the forces that determine behaviour’s intensity. There are different types of motivation that influences us from day to day and they have different effects from a short term to long term. As human beings we are inspired in different ways to different motivations. There are two main different types of motivations: Intrinsic motivation and Extrinsic motivation. Bloom and Engelhart (1956) revealed that there were three factors influencing on students’ learning achievement including, cognitive domain namely students’ own background knowledge and skills, affective domain such as attitude on the subject, school and learning processes, interest, motivation, self-efficacy, self-esteem and teaching quality factors namely, instruction acknowledgement, participation in class activities, teacher’s sanction system and giving feedbacks (Bloom & Engelhart, 1956).

Theories of Motivation What is the motivation for this? According to the text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things; this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves.
Attraction and repulsion incentives combine to determine the overall motivation of the person to act in a certain way. I am very motivated to do well in this class because I decided I wanted to do well in this course so I am taking the required actions to do so. My motivation is mainly intrinsic because it is based on the activity itself and the direct outcome of the activity.
