Considering the high unemp... ... middle of paper ... ... The Great Depression brought worries and sorrows to some people in the United States. With so many individuals unemployed, women felt forced to obtain a job they did not want. Few prostitutes did it for pleasure; however many did it as a necessity. Prostitutes were willing to work for very low prices just to earn money during the depression.
2017 Pg.31) prostitution reflects and shows the economic inequality in the society. Many poor women feel the need to become prostitutes because of their lack of money; since wealthier women do not experience this problem and have other sources of income, they do not feel the need to act in this crime and can easily look down on the idea of becoming a prostitute. Conflict theorists, analyze prostitution as a part of a large problem of inequality and lack of resources. Women have not had the most equal access to economic opportunities. Although it’s getting rarer in some societies, women are forbidden to own their own property; and in others, they suffer discrimination when trying to work and earn money to support themselves.
Prostitution Prostitution is something that has been overlooked over time for minority groups. Many women struggle to survive in a society that takes away their identity. Women have turned to prostitution to create a stable living for themselves, even if they have to suffer through it. There are many people that typically misunderstand prostitution and there are hidden realities that need to be better known. Some advocates argue that women in prostitution sell sex as a consenting adult, but those who do consent are typically part of a privileged minority, primarily white, middle-class, Western women in escort agencies, not remotely representative of the global majority. A pimps right to sell doesn’t trump a prostitutes right to not be sold in a trade that preys on women already marginalized by class and
During the late 19th- and early 20th century, the nature of society forced the working class women of America to take advantage of any means to support themselves, including prostitution. Each woman had to decide herself which work option best supported her financially. During this time, women had limited options as far as work was concerned. As time went on, more and more women were forced to work, because they had no husband and no other means of building up a dowry for a husband. By 1910 the wage labor force was made up of about 20% of women as young as fourteen.
This can only be possible if the person has established a personal connection with his/her job that ignites his/her sense of survival. In other words, people who engage in prostitution must either be doing so at their conviction or forced by circumstances. It must, therefore, be understood that not all prostitutes are victims of human trafficking. US streets are filled with many indigenous prostitutes than the trafficked women into the country. The prostitutes are faced with self-generated plights.
In the past, there was an extremely small number of jobs that was available to women. If the women were poor and had no husband they would more than likely turn to prostitution as a main source of income. As time went on, more varied jobs were available to women, which caused the number of prostitutes to decrease significantly and finally it was made completely illegal by the government. B., & Meier, R. F. 2011) A prostitute worker can see her or his job as power made real because she has ownership of her own body, which gives it her right to use her body as she wants. In the other hand if he or she is being pushed into prostitution because of the lack of education and money then they might fell as if they own their body what so ever. It's kind of like what the act of sex itself symbolizes to them control, power, love. After all sex, itself has such a different aspect on everyone’s life; but for a prostitute it might just be a lack of education or lack of money. We all must service in the world even if your job is illegal in most countries, you still must find a way to survive.
Prostitutes are not safe but this is there only source of income so it’s hard for them to quite. Prostitutes are not only physically abused but also sexually abused. “Seventy-six percent of those who had been raped had been raped by customers” (Farley, Lynne, and Cotton 249). Legalizing prostitution would bring these numbers significantly higher because prostitution work would keep on growing and so would violence. If prostitution was illegal there wouldn’t be so many crime towards them and these women would be safe.
