There are many themes can be found in the play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, such as religion, sexuality and politics. Actually, they are all connected and related to the source of selfishness, because it just acts like a road sign to give a direction to a person. Sometimes, selfishness can lead you the way to save ourselves when you are in different situations; but at the same time, selfishness can hurt and change a person deeply. In these two scenes, act 1 scene 8 and act 2 scene 9, we can see how selfishness appears in these two pairs of couples which are in different situations, Joe with Harper and Louis with Prior.

Joe only cares for himself from the beginning of the play. He doesn’t admit or show others that he is a true homosexual. Not only because of the society still don’t widely accept a homosexual at that time, it is also because of his religion. If Joe decides to be a homosexual, then Mormons consider him is a serious sin person. Therefore, Joe starts to save himself in a nominal marriage with Harper. He treats this relationship as a friendship, because there is no husband in the world will call his wife “Buddy”. Joe doesn’t have an attention to Harper. Even though he knows she is suffering some kind of drug problem, but he still doesn’t care and find out the reason behind the issue. In addition, Harper never receives any sexual gratification from Joe. That makes Harper feels rejected, and she starts to question herself whether she is unattractive than other women or she is an enemy of Joe. “I’m the enemy. That’s easy. That doesn’t change. You think you’re the only one who hates sex; I do; I hate it with you” (Kushner 43) In spite of that isn’t Harper’s fault; Joe doesn’t feel her is attractive, because Joe is ...

... not Louis and Prior and Prior’s disease.” ( Kushner 84) The Leaving of Louis and the hopeless waiting are the hurtful things for Prior. Louis selfishness makes Prior to wait a promise that will never come true.

The difference between Joe and Louis is Joe want to find a safe haven to cover his sexuality, and Louis doesn’t embrace his boyfriend’s illness. They are both ruin the precious time of their lovers because of their selfishness. This two scenes definitely important and connect to the whole play. Because of their religion and sexuality are the sources of selfishness. Selfishness is leading them to save themselves, but also changing the views of Harper and Prior. For example, maybe they both scare to love another person again. In addition, maybe the selfishness brings Joe and Louis together, because they are somewhat similar in the way of treating others.
