War is a very interesting experience, because during war it seems that nothing good can come from the fighting. However, war has brought about many positive things such as, the end of terrible rulers, it is a way to teach valuable lessons, and great literature about war have been created. Many of the great authors write about how they view war and give their take on what the war is like. Kurt Vonnegut is an outstanding example of how war inspired and author to write about his experience of war. One of Kurt Vonnegut’s most know books about war is Slaughterhouse Five. One critic mentions that "no characters in contemporary fiction are more traumatized and emotionally damaged than those of Kurt Vonnegut" (Broer 121). Just like Billy, Vonnegut was taken as a POW and witnessed the firebombing of Dresden (Vees-Gulani 175). During his time as a prisoner of war Billy meets a German guard named Werner Gluck, and the two are related but they are not aware of the relationship. The relationship between Billy and Gluck symbolizes how Vonnegut was a fourth generation german, and it was possible that Vonnegut had relatives in the Nazi army. Billy was born in a town named Illum, Illinois which symbolizes how Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Creating Billy Pilgrim was one way that Kurt Vonnegut expressed his emotions he felt during the war.
One of Kurt Vonnegut's biggest messages throughout the book is promoting anti-war through ironies. One example is "when one of the soldiers, a POW, survives the fire-bombing, but dies afterward from the dry heaves because he has to bury dead bodies" (Vit). Vonnegut makes Billy’s comrade's seem like they are well trained, but Billy is more suited to survive the war.
