Seeing What is Invisible
There are more than 200 million people in the U.S.A, and every one of them lives an individual life. When people see that their life is starting to be too redundant, they try and make a liberating change that will help others and themselves recognize their identity. In “The Vanishing American” by Charles Beaumont, Mr. Mitchell and his interactions with the “King Richard” lion statue reflect the theme of people’s lives being so redundant that they disappear out of the existence of everyday life, unless they step off of their regular road of life and perform more liberating actions. Minchell stays consecutively normal in his work space. Mr. Minchell works a job that seems to be menial and quite repetitive, as mentioned in “He set his fingers pecking again over the keyboard”(273), “A mile-long ribbon of paper lay gathered on the desk”(273), and “He stared at the paper and thought of the fifty-three pages of manifest”(273). These sentences also lead to reason that this job he has is an average desk job where he works in a bland environment with little to no variation in his day to day experiences at work. Accordingly, Mr. Minchell is unseen throughout his walk home from work. This is displayed when Mr. Minchell steps in the elevator and is ignored by the elevator operator girl who, after he had said, “‘Long day.’”(274) to her, “The girl said nothing.”(274) Mr. Minchell’s experience, just outside of his work building, with his boss, is no different when he nods, smiles, and says, “‘Good night, Mr. Diemel.”(274) then Mr. Diemel only “look[s] up briefly, blink[s], and return[s] to his conversation.”(274) Even so, the man is invisible in his own home. As Mr. Minchell walks in the door and says, “‘Madge, I’m home.’ Madge did not answer.”(276) and as evidence she never noticed him she later says to Mr.
