Have you ever wanted something so badly, you would have stolen to get it, even if there could have been an easier way? Well that’s exactly what happened in the short story,”Thank-You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes. In the story, a woman is walking down the street when a boy named Roger tries to steal her purse. Roger falls over, and because his face was dirty, she takes him to her house instead of the police so he could wash his face. There, she makes him some dinner, and when it is time for him to go, she gives him ten dollars to buy a pair of blue suede shoes, which is why he tried to steal her purse in the first place. I think the theme of this story is that kindness can find you in the bleakest of scenarios.

One way Hughes conveys the theme is when Roger firsts encounters the woman. “He looked as if he were fourteen or fifteen, frail and willow-wild, in tennis shoes and blue jeans.” This shows how he was already wasn't doing so good, so he tried to steal from the woman, who saw what a bad spot he was in, and gave him a bit of kindness when he needed it the most. …show more content…
