“Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District thirteen” (Collins, 2016)and this is true for the characters of The Hunger Games. The film, The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross in 2012 is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The story takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem, where boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 must take part in the 74th Hunger Games, a televised annual event in which the “tributes” are required to fight to the death until there is only one survivor. The theme of survival and sacrifice is shown throughout the film in three key events that Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister’s Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields) place. In the second final scene, sacrifice is clearly demonstrated with the shores Katniss and Peeta, the only two survivals, from the same District, District 12. This is accompanied by an announcement that two people can win the Hunger Games, from the initial one. Poison berries are used by Katniss early in the film forcing the game makers, who would be personally held responsible for such a catastrophe, possibly with lethal consequences. Therefore, she hoped that by offering to commit suicide, she might force them to Peeta and her live after all.
