Katherine Mansfield has truly shown the suffering pain that Miss Brill has experienced over time, but Miss Brill seems to not have correct mind set. Mansfield describes Miss Brill as a lonely, isolated, English school teacher that wears a fur necklet. She describes the setting in France and while Miss Brill visits different places. The central theme of “Miss Brill” is discovering the true pain and attempts in life of lonely people to experience different people in the world. Miss Brill strives for warmth and companionship of others. Miss Brill looks to her fur for comfort and when she discusses the band playing. The story provides different points of view to show and understand Miss Brill. For example, the young man and the young couple provide details and views of Miss Brill and she does not actually perceive herself as they say. Her different fantasies of fitting in with others, the symbolism of her fur, and her concentration of others did not help her escape from being lonely. Her belief of being an actress has led to her believe that she and everyone else has a specific part to play on the stage of life within the park. When the author states this, the foreshadowing of Miss Brill’s imagery begins to unfold. Miss Brill also develops an illustration of delusional thinking. Her mind changes drastically and so do her emotions. When someone criticizes her fur, she seems to ignore others and her regular activities to make it home as soon as possible. Symbolism of the fur provides insight to Miss Brill and her true feelings. Miss Brill does begin to cry once she is home and finally, she sees reality through her own eyes. All in all, Miss Brill is a character in her own perception of watching other people’s lives, but a lonely woman in reality. Through the actions of Miss Brill using her fur scarf as an inanimate object to become her friend, to watching the woman rejecting the flowers from the little boy, Miss Brill has created her own fantasy world of actors and actresses getting on and off the stage, making her not wanting to discover the woman who she is right now. As Miss Brill hears the teasing of the young couple and wakes up from her fantasy world and imagination, she has finally understood how the world is not perceived as she wanted it to be.
Partying, drinking, and dancing; these are the adjectives most commonly associated with the life of a flapper. While these descriptions are accurate, they do not inform people of the advantages and gains flappers made for the female gender. The flapper embodied the idea of freedom from the usual duties of a young female in the 1920s. These women were no longer tied down with the expectation that they immediately become a wife and mother, as well as being conservative and modest. By diving into a look at the fashion, music, and lifestyle of the flapper during the 1920s it will become obvious that they were not only independent, liberated, and enjoying many more freedoms than they had previously throughout history, but that they also helped to pave the way for future generations of women’s quest for independence.

Our narrator is a non-participant and we learn no details about this person, from a physical sense. Nothing to tell us whether it is a friend of Miss Brill, a relative, or just someone watching. Katherine Mansfield’s Miss Brill comes alive from the descriptions we get from this anonymous person. The narrator uses limited omniscience while telling us about this beautiful Sunday afternoon. By this I mean the narrator has a great insight into Miss Brill’s perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and into her world as a whole, but no real insight into any of the other characters in this story. By using this point of view, we see the world through the eyes of Miss Brill, and feel her emotions, even though this third party is telling us the story. This beautiful fall afternoon in France unfolds before our eyes because of the pain-staking details given to us by the narrator. We aren’t told many things straight out, but the details are such that we can feel the chill coming into the air and see the leaves of fall drifting to the earth. One major trend of the 1920s was the short bob. This hairstyle was innovated by Coco Chanel. Before women cut their hair they used to wear their hair long so as a result, cutting their hair shorter was a form of rebellion. Another item of clothing that often went along with the bob is a hat called the cloche hat. Cloche is the French word for bell. They were decorated with different kinds of appliques feathers and brooches. During the 1920s most women were found wearing the cloche hat. When women were not wearing hats, they were found wearing headbands to compliment their bobbed hair. They also came in a variety of designs with gold accents, gems, and feathers.
The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family. In addition, they even manage to stick together after being separated for one of their own. These show how even in the darkest time they still manage to find a glimmer of hope and they pursued on.
Miss Brill’s loneliness causes her to listen in on conversations. This is her only means of achieving a sense of companionship. She feels that for a moment she is “sitting in other people’s lives just for a minute” (98). Aside from that, she is part of no one’s life.

Each Sunday, Miss Brill ventures down to the park to watch and listen to the band play. She finds herself listening not only to the band, but also to strangers who walk together and converse before her. Her interest in the lives of those around her shows the reader that Miss Brill lacks companionship.

Katherine Mansfield belongs to a group of female authors that have used their financial resources and social standing to critique the patriarchal status quo. Like Virginia Woolf, Mansfield was socioeconomically privileged enough to write influential texts that have been deemed as ‘proto-feminist’ before the initial feminist movements. The progressive era in which Mansfield writes proves to be especially problematic because, “[w]hile the Modernist tradition typically undermined middle-class values, women … did not have the recognized rights necessary to fully embrace the liberation from the[se] values” (Martin 69). Her short stories emphasized particular facets of female oppression, ranging from gendered social inequality to economic classism, and it is apparent that “[p]oor or rich, single or married, Mansfield’s women characters are all victims of their society” (Aihong 101). Mansfield’s short stories, “The Garden Party” and “Miss Brill”, represent the feminist struggle to identify traditional patriarchy as an inherent caste system in modernity. This notion is exemplified through the social bonds women create, the naïve innocence associated with the upper classes, and the purposeful dehumanization of women through oppressive patriarchal methods. By examining the female characters in “The Garden Party” and “Miss Brill”, it is evident that their relationships with other characters and themselves notify the reader of their encultured classist preconceptions, which is beneficial to analyze before discussing the sources of oppression.

When faced with a danger that may mar our existence, as humans we have the instinct to defend ourselves against destruction. Miss Brill’s character illustrates this human trait. Mansfield's intent in this story was displayed through Brill. Miss Brill made no effort to communicate with others but instead observed them through a goggled imagination. She took no effort to accept what and who she is, but believed she was something different. And when she was faced to deal with the reality of the world her expectations set her on a path to disappointment. Her ideals and beliefs made her naive about the world, eventually causing her to be hurt making her realize the world is not at all a play.
Mrs. Mallard is described as being young and having "a fair, calm face" symbolizing the beauty and innocence of a child. Brently Mallard had repressed her, and now through this seemingly tragic event she is freed of his rule over her and she is able to go on with her life.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that loneliness is the most conveyed theme in this novel. For example, virtually everyone in this novel exhibits loneliness at some point. I believe that the Great Depression is the root cause for this loneliness and isolation to appear in this novel everywhere. The characters, even admit to feeling lonely and/or secluded because it affects their daily lives tremendously. The fact that Candy, Crooks, and Curley’s wife admit to complete strangers about their fear of being cast off is just another reason to believe that they are in complete desperation. All this evidence supports my thesis on why I strongly believe that I consider loneliness as the perfect theme to this essay.
The point of view that Katherine Mansfield has chosen to use in "Miss Brill" serves two purposes. First, it illustrates how Miss Brill herself views the world and, second, it helps the reader take the same journey of burgeoning awareness as Miss Brill.
Mrs. Mallard’s repressed married life is a secret that she keeps to herself. She is not open and honest with her sister Josephine who has shown nothing but concern. This is clearly evident in the great care that her sister and husband’s friend Richard show to break the news of her husband’s tragic death as gently as they can. They think that she is so much in love with him that hearing the news of his death would aggravate her poor heart condition and lead to death. Little do they know that she did not love him dearly at all and in fact took the news in a very positive way, opening her arms to welcome a new life without her husband. This can be seen in the fact that when she storms into her room and her focus shifts drastically from that of her husband’s death to nature that is symbolic of new life and possibilities awaiting her.
