To Kill A Mockingbird Essay: A Love Story

The most misunderstood emotion is love. Most people usually only associate love with family or a significant other. There are many different perspectives of love that can be easily interpreted into something completely opposite of the intended meaning. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, author Harper Lee states that her book is “ a love story, plain and simple.” This quote can confuse people because the book is very far from a romance novel. However, that is not the type of love that she is referring too. This type of love is the love between friends, neighbors, and family and in the book love is shown by different characters as actions to bring them all together to understand each other. Atticus takes on the trial and honestly believes that Tom is innocent and goes out of his way to prove his point to the court. The people of Maycomb are angry with Atticus for taking the case. SInce he actually wants to try and win makes them hate him even more. During the trial Atticus looks at the jury and says, “I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family”(275). Atticus tries his hardest to prove his case but the people of Maycomb do not have a change in their feelings toward Tom. Shortly after Tom Robinson is found guilty he is shot within the next week. This makes Atticus upset and it upsets Jem. Also. Tom’s friend and family reach out to Atticus after Tom’s death to thank him for the support and hard work during the trial. Slowly, Atticus changes the thoughts of the people in Maycomb with his love and support for
