They love each other very much in the story in very different ways. They start with the same type of love for each other, but after Hassan is raped and Amir totally betrays him. Some of the symbolism is that this tree is in a cemetery where people die and are laid to rest. After Amir sees Hassan get raped him there after is extremely guilty of what he has done. Amir and Hassan go to the tree and Amir picks up hard pomegranates and throws them as hard as he can at Hassan’s face. After Hassan not flinching and inch he tells Hassan to come on pick up a fruit and hit me. Hassan refuses and does not speak.This reaction proves that Hassan understands Amirs guilt and problem understands what he has seen and what Amir thinks. A quote that describes this well is “The color fell from his face. Next to him, the stapled pages of the story I’d promised to read him fluttered in the breeze. I hurled the pomegranate at him”(229). For example the start of the book and the end of the book, everything finished off in different places. The biggest example of this for me was how at the beginning of the story Baba was a great legend that was rich and everyone was afraid of but by the end of the story because of his wrong doings like cheating on his wife and becoming Hassan’s father. At the end of the book everyone looks at him as a weak figure because he did so much to redeem himself, yet he was so supposed to be such a legendary person. Another huge example of this is Amir and Hassan’s relationship it started as childhood best friends that could never leave each other in years no matter what. And the friendship basically is totally destroyed and stops happening when Amir sees Hassan get raped and he is so upset with this that he can 't think of anything else.
