During the time period The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, was written many people contained the feeling of guilt. Confession was what determined their verdict of being guilty or not. Many people during this time period were being accused of many false accusations, and then proven guilty. These false accusations are what encouraged the people of this time to not make any comments to the accusations, and ended up not confessing. Three of the main character, John Proctor, Reverend Parris, and Abigail Williams, were examples of how The Crucible portrayed injustice. All three characters were accused of different accusations, and in the end all had different outcomes. The inconsistencies of the outcomes were the reasons behind the injustice. The theme of injustice was shown through many characters throughout the play; every character chose to handle it differently and because of that got different outcomes. Her lies got worse and worse as the days went on. She continued to try to keep herself out of trouble, and get the justice that everyone else deserved. She ended up running away with all her secrets and guilt, just to save herself. Others suffered punishment, while she got away. This does not exhibit justice at all. She knew her troubles, yet she continued to lie and say no one talked about her, and if they did it was a lie. Parris says, “My niece, sir, my niece- I believe she has vanished,” (1322). Everyone in town knew her name was spoiled, but if they said anything against Abigail they would be accused of something. Once everyone knew about Abigail and Proctor she ended up running away from her guilt, which is never good. Her motivation of hiding from her guilt caused her to run away from her problems. Running away from problems is not a display of justice, but simply injustice for everyone it
