For some the bible is the path to the correct way of living, for others the true path is the journey and the lessons you learn along the way. Spirituality and beliefs are often taken as means of hope or escape for certain individuals. Hope that one day all the evil on this earth will go away or hope that one day you’ll be able to escape it all. Additionally, in certain households’ religion is the basis of livelihood and there is no other way around it. Ironically, while being in school you learn things that can make you doubt what you were taught at home. In Antonio’s case it will cause him to grow more apart from his mother’s ideals. Even though Maria loves Antonio she doesn’t want the best for him as a person, she wants him to do the best he can but for herself. Maria is stuck upon her family's name and bringing a good label for it. Due to this, Antonio grows farther apart from his mom and becomes closer to Ultima. Maria is a close-minded person she only sees what she wants to see. On the contrary, Ultima on the other hand is open minded she likes to try and learn new things, eventually making Antonio see her as a mother figure and a friend who he can go for guidance to. Ultima can be understood and seen as different shades of gray but she is one of the only individuals that can bring clarity to Antonio. He believes so much in Ultima and in her way of thinking that he comes to believe that she can be more powerful than God himself. He thinks this after Ultima cures Lucas when he came upon a curse given to him by Tenorio’s daughters. A priest from El Puerto and a doctor were both called to cure Lucas, and they both failed. Ultima agreed to try and cure Lucas and she took Antonio with her. He witnessed it all, how Ultima’s magical herbs worked, he saw a curandera in action.“The powers of the doctors and the power of the church...failed...everyone depended on Ultima’s magic.Was it possible that there was more power in Ultima’s magic than in the priest?” (Anaya 99) Throughout the book Antonio’s questions become more intense.
