Sometimes seeing is believing. By seeing things in life it helps someone believe that it is real or could possibly become real. In the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson she talks about a women with postpartum depression. The narrator and her husband move into a house and sleep in the room with a yellow wallpaper with a strange pattern. In The Yellow Wallpaper she is able to find the friend. The pattern of the wall paper though is trapping her friend inside. Also she feels as if she is being boxed in her room by the wallpaper. The Yellow Wallpaper symbolizes friendship “I don't blame her a bit. It must be very humiliating to be caught creeping by daylight!I always lock the door when I creep by daylight. I can't do it at night, for I know John would suspect something at once.” (Stetson 654). The color yellow symbolizes hope and happiness. When she is desperate to find happiness she is able to find herself in the wallpaper. Since she is depressed the women in the wallpaper, which is herself, helps her get through being stuck in society. The reason why she is friends with herself is because she’s the only person she has. “I think the women gets out in the daytime! And i'll tell you why-privately- i've seen her! I can see her out ever one of my windows! It is the same women, I know, for she is always creeping, and most women do not creep by daylight.” (Stetson 653). The Yellow Wallpaper symbolization helps the narrator find a friend. By finding another side of herself she was able to live through her. The narrator is just like the woman in the wallpaper were both trapped inside most of the time that is why she creeped around outside during the daylight unlike others. The reasoning for this is the daylight is the same as the yellow wallpaper and is able to symbolize the happiness that she wants to have. Although, for her, she has nothing more to focus on she trusts her imagination to pass the time. Over time she becomes more and more obsessed with the yellow wallpaper, which leaves her in shock. “The wallpaper becomes a projection screen of the narrator growing fright.” (Berman, p.47) This means that the narrator goes to herself on the wall. The isolated woman in the yellow paper is her own reflection. Something that the narrator still does not realize, she only feels the need to release the woman trapped in the wall. She refers to her room as a prison continuously. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," is the disheartening tale of a woman suffering from postpartum depression. Set during the late 1890s, the story shows the mental and emotional results of the typical "rest cure" prescribed during that era and the narrator’s reaction to this course of treatment. It would appear that Gilman was writing about her own anguish as she herself underwent such a treatment with Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell in 1887, just two years after the birth of her daughter Katherine. The rest cure that the narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper" describes is very close to what Gilman herself experienced; therefore, the story can be read as reflecting the feelings of women like herself who suffered through such treatments. Because of her experience with the rest cure, it can even be said that Gilman based the narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper" loosely on herself. But I believe that expressing her negative feelings about the popular rest cure is only half of the message that Gilman wanted to send. Within the subtext of this story lies the theme of oppression: the oppression of the rights of women especially inside of marriage.
