Learning how to write an essay can be a frustrating and agitating process, but it doesn’t have to be. There are techniques to help make this process easier. The writing process has three simple steps. These steps are known as prewriting, drafting, and revising. Following these simple steps can help and improve your writing. The first step of the writing process is prewriting. Prewriting is everything you do before you begin your rough draft. During this step you will generate and develop ideas about the topic. There are a few techniques that can help you understand the topic and the purpose of the assignment. These techniques can help manage time. The techniques are free writing, clustering, and preparing an outline. In free writing, you let you thoughts flow as they will, putting pen to paper and writing down whatever come to your mind. You write non-stop about a subject for a certain amount of time. You don’t worry about the quality of what you write and issues like spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mistakes don’t matter in this technique. The first technique is to have a good title that will grab the reader attention. The second technique is having a thesis statement. At the end of your first paragraph, write one sentence statement that is a basis for your entire essay. A great thesis statement lets the reader know what the paper will cover. The third technique is including a topic sentence in each paragraph that states the main idea of the paragraph. Just like the thesis statement, the topic sentence lets you know what the paragraph contains. The fourth technique is having a sufficient support in all your main ideas.
