Walt Disney: From Failure to Household Name

“I only hope we don't lose sight of one thing- that it was all started by a mouse” - Walt Disney (Walt Disney). Who is that mouse that started it all? Mickey Mouse, that is who started it all. What did he start? He started the success of Walt Disney, his creator. Walt Disney can often be compared to some of the most successful industrialists due to him entertaining an unlimited number of people and for being one of the best people that could sell their hard work (Crowther). The greatest thing he did in his career was bringing his own imagination to animation (Finch 127). Walt Disney overcame failure by creating Mickey Mouse, starting the Walt Disney Company, and creating the legendary Disney Parks.

Walt Disney had cartoon characters before Mickey Mouse, but those characters failed Disney unlike his beloved mouse. Mickey Mouse came to Disney's mind in March 1928 after his New York distributor, Charles Mintz, took the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from him (Steamboat Willie). Since Disney no longer had a cartoon character to produce, Mickey Mouse was born. The first time the large public saw Mickey was in a cartoon short titled Steamboat Willie (Spurgeon). Steamboat Willie was a success and gave Disney his own footing in the animation industry.

From his success in Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse starred in more cartoon shorts and came to be a world famous character. Mickey Mouse was the first major star the Disney Studio's first major star (Steamboat Willie). Steamboat Willie began Disney's and Mickey's career in the entertainment industry.
