Walt Disney: From Failure to Household Name
“I only hope we don't lose sight of one thing- that it was all started by a mouse” - Walt Disney (Walt Disney). Who is that mouse that started it all? Mickey Mouse, that is who started it all. What did he start? He started the success of Walt Disney, his creator. Walt Disney can often be compared to some of the most successful industrialists due to him entertaining an unlimited number of people and for being one of the best people that could sell their hard work (Crowther). The greatest thing he did in his career was bringing his own imagination to animation (Finch 127). Walt Disney overcame failure by creating Mickey Mouse, starting the Walt Disney Company, and creating the legendary Disney Parks.
Walt Disney had cartoon characters before Mickey Mouse, but those characters failed Disney unlike his beloved mouse. Mickey Mouse came to Disney's mind in March 1928 after his New York distributor, Charles Mintz, took the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from him (Steamboat Willie). Since Disney no longer had a cartoon character to produce, Mickey Mouse was born. The first time the large public saw Mickey was in a cartoon short titled Steamboat Willie (Spurgeon). Steamboat Willie was a success and gave Disney his own footing in the animation industry.
From his success in Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse starred in more cartoon shorts and came to be a world famous character. Mickey Mouse was the first major star the Disney Studio's first major star (Steamboat Willie). Steamboat Willie began Disney's and Mickey's career in the entertainment industry. Walt Disney was on a train ride to Hollywood after the loss of his character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit when he decided to start from scratch. He bounced ideas off of his wife as to what would make a cute character. Walt started doodling and eventually settled on a mouse. He wanted to name the mouse Mortimer but his wife laughed and said Mickey was a nicer name, and thus a star was born. (Miller)
While most just think of Walt Disney as the creator of the Disney movie empire and the Disney theme parks, those such as author Steven Watts, who think more deeply about Disney, consider him to be the “influential architect of modern America” (Watts, p. 4). While the genius of Walt Disney has affected many aspects of American, and now overseas, cultures, his empire has had a significant impact on what people experience during childhood.
Walt Disney is the greatest entrepreneur of all time in most minds of little people and big people everywhere. The reason for this is he started his ‘business’, selling sketches, at the age of around seven years old. He was a vibrant child, as well considering he painted the side of his barn with tar. To him schoolwork was boring which he actually said once he was a lot older. Walt Disney was a family man, considering he had so many children; his children even had lots of children. Walt Disney was a man with a lot of talent, character, and imagination, who deeply loved fairy tales.
With a name like Walt Disney, it seems like you are expected to do great things and have your name known across America. From a young age, Walt Disney had an interest in all things animation. Growing up in a time where animation and TV was making its first appearances, Walt Disney wanted to be a part of the sensation. Striving and pushing forward with his natural talent of the creative arts and entertainment, Mr. Walt Disney became one of the most well-known entertainers that is mentioned all around the world. His great animation and artistic works but also with his world famous characters and popular theme parks, the first one, Disneyland, being built in Anaheim, California in 1955.
In 1928 Disney created Mickey Mouse, taking his career further. Although after making Mickey Mouse, Disney almost went bankrupt again.
The year 1928 was pivotal for Walt Disney and the rest of society; Mickey Mouse was created and he transformed Disney’s career to where Disney was able to shape pop culture and fill viewers everywhere with childlike wonder. Before the rise of his famous cartoon mouse, Disney struggled to run a successful company; however, he maintained a passion for film that led him to fame. He grew up on a farm with strict parents that did not allow him to play with toys as a child. This is believed to be the source for his avid imagination as an adult and a source for his animal characters.
In reviewing the vast corporation of the Walt Disney Company and all that it has to offer, one profound statement made by Walt Disney himself comes to the forefront, “I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse” (Walt, n.d.). This statement suggests that the company has a strong focus to continually guide them in the way of the original idea of the company. Even as it watches the changes taking place in society and adapts to the new technologies and innovations, the Walt Disney Company has been able to implement diverse strategies for its growth and prosperity.

A basic of Disney theme parks is the Main Street USA zone. This section features highly in all of the parks, usually coming right after the entrance. Key services like Guest Relations are located in this section, inside the "City Hall" (HK Disney Source, 2014). There are a number of elements to the Main Street, USA exhibit, and these will be discussed along with the history of Main Street USA in this paper. In particular, how the different elements of Main Street USA work together are covered. The concept has proven to be long-lasting, even across cultures, because of its magical portrayal of idealized American life, which draws heavily on Walt Disney's own childhood experiences.
In 1928, Walt disney created one of the most known icons in cartoons, Mickey mouse. As a popular cartoon character, Mickey Mouse debuted in many shows, movies, and video games. Mickey Mouse has taught the audience to always look on the bright side of things, how to solve problems, amd and listen to the rules or end up facing consequences in his movies, shows, and video games.

Today, the name Walt Disney is so closely intertwined with the medium of animation that, according to The World History of Animation, ‘many people are surprised to hear that he didn’t invent animation.’ (reference) While it is true that Walt Disney did not invent the art of animation, his company Walt Disney Studios is undoubtedly of the greatest pioneers in animation history revolutionising the techniques and practices of the form since early works such as Steamboat Willie (date) and Snow White and the seven dwarves (date). This essay aims to explore and discuss all factors that have been instrumental in the continuing mainstream success of Disney, such as its early days, obstacles and successes, and Walt Disney’s constant push for advancement and innovation within the field and accepted procedures. It will then go on to examine how the marketing techniques and commercial expertise was able to promote the films financial success and audience attachment.
Walt Disney was the most creative an innovative person in the entertainment business in the 20th century. His movies and animations had a huge impact on family life and the movie and animation industry. He also created shows for television and opened Disney Land which were both huge successes. Without his contributions to the movie and animation industry, movies and cartoons would not be where they were today. The creation of Disneyland and Walt Disney World also brought families together by creating a family oriented place for everyone to enjoy together. Walt Disney had a huge impact on life as we know it today. He was an inspiration to others because he had big dreams that some people wouldn't even imagine, and he made them a reality. Walt Disney definitely left his mark on life before he passed.
The man, the dreamer, the artist, the creator, producer, the pioneer, and the developer; Walt Disney accomplished building his own empire along with his legacy that continues to grow every day. Every individual has a story about what drives them to be the person they are today and will be tomorrow. Personally, I love his impressive movies and alluring theme parks. Walt Disney has played an integral part of my family’s life. In fact, my daughter became engaged at the end of Main Street, in a fairy-tale moment in front of the enchanted Cinderella’s Castle, in the Magic Kingdom theme park for her birthday over the holidays. Just about everyone has some knowledge of Walt Disney’s incredible endeavors. However, how many people can say that they have knowledge of the man Disney was before creating Mickey Mouse and what follows?
