“We say that slavery had vanished from European civilization, but this is not true. Slavery still exists, but now it applies only to women and it’s name is prostitution.” (Victor Hugo, Les Misérables). Prostitution is sexual activities in exchange for immediate payment either in money or other valuables. Prostitution is most commonly performed by women, however now it can be performed either by men, women even children. Prostitution plays a large role in the spread of many sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and AIDs. In The Netherlands and Germany, the legalization of the sex industry is the root cause of why the sex trafficking industry is so terrible in these areas. In The Netherlands 80% of the women, in brothels, were trafficked women from many different countries(Budapest Group, 1999. 1). In Germany, as well, 75% of the women in the sex industry, including brothels, prostitution, and sex clubs, were from Uruguay, Argentina, and many other countries in south American (Altink, 1993, p.33). Women also known as “ sex workers ” can be bought and sold at any time like cattle. These women can be bought at all times, day or night, and multiple times. The legalization of prostitution legalizes the entire industry including pimps, brothels, and increases the rate of sex trafficking. This industry is not safe and very hard to control or monitor. In other words the demand for the sex industry will become so great there won 't be any way to control it.
