The War of the Worlds

The novel is about Martians invading earth because they can no longer survive on mars. The people try everything to get rid of the Martians but in the end nature wins against science. H.G. Wells has included a lot of science fiction in this story which makes this story effective. In the 1st chapter the narrator describes how Earth may be seen ‘by greater, more intelligent forces’ same as humans ‘with microscopes scrutinize the transient.’ This novel is still popular today for the wait of a big film coming out next year.

However, even though Superman is faster than a speeding bullet. A speeding bullet compares nothing to traveling at the speed of light! Superman’s punches are even slow and sluggish. Not only is Goku fast, but also incredibly strong. Goku can train in over 100x times the gravity of Earth and has been known to send his enemies flying halfway across the Earth in one punch.

Unfortunately, our actual technology slightly provides strong, useful information about the red planet because of the vast distance between us. While people such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas try to convince us with hundred million dollar movies that we are not alone, engineers and geologists like from the NASA-Stanford University team pursue, based on true evidence, the idea of possible life on Mars. However, the burden of proof is sometimes too heavy even based on real evidence. The tough debate started on August 1996, when scientists from the NASA-SU team announced that a meteorite found on the Antartica contained evidence of past life on the red planet. They supported their conclusion on the basis of organic molecules, carbonates, and minerals found inside the rock, which are basic components of living things.

The first reason as to why extraterrestrial life could perhaps exist is that there is a vast amount of galaxies, stars, planets, and solar systems that humans have not yet discovered. To think that humans, the only civilization on planet earth, are the only living organisms in space would be quite absurd. Furthermore, a second reason as to why extraterrestrials could subsist is that life thrives in the most extreme conditions. This means that whether organisms are in the depths of the ocean, in the midst of the ozone layer, or in the scorching hot temperatures of volcanos; life always finds a way to adapt. However, some may argue that life could not possible coin... ... middle of paper ... ...tings.

The War of the Worlds, a novel written by H.G. Wells in 1898, is considered by Kroeber, a professor and writer of the introduction to the Signet Classic version of the same book, to be “the most famous and most important science fiction story ever published.” (Wells, vii) The novel focuses primarily on an unnamed narrator, who struggles to not only save his wife, but himself from the rampaging Martians and their instruments of destruction, such as the Heat-ray and the black smoke. Through mentions of accurate scientific research, fictional news stories, and geographic settings, Wells creatively presents to the reader a story with a sense of verisimilitude that is seemingly produced to create the image that the accounts were real and factual. It may or may not come as a surprise to the reader that the novel focuses on Martians, aliens from the planet Mars. As science has proved to us, Mars does indeed have elements that can harbor life.

That event was followed by the Beatles themselves, who arrived in New York February 8, 1964 for three appearances with Ed Sullivan. The first show was scheduled for Sunday, February 9, the second was telecast from Miami a week later, and the third pre-taped for an airing in March. These concerts were the most watched television programs ever (70 million viewers) until recently. The Beatles' arrival in the United States was presaged by a deluge of advance publicity. Newsweek, Time, and Life have chronicled Beatlemania, UPI, and the AP(Associated Press) had done their part for the cause (including an AP wirephoto of J. Paul Getty sporting a Beatle wig), and even Vogue shoved high fashion aside momentarily in it's January, 1964 issue and carried a full-page photo of the group.

At the end of the novel H.G. Wells presents ‘Social Order’ as been destroyed and nothing left except the hope from the artilleryman. A modern reader would not react to this because if Martians destroyed everything we’ve worked for we cannot do anything about it. But Wells could do something about it. I really enjoyed this novel because he included so many scientific words like ‘liquefaction’ or ‘inert’ which makes the novel quite remarkable.

The War of the Worlds radio play was a dramatization of H.G. Well’s novel The War of the worlds (1898 novel relating the story of an alien invasion on Earth) and performed as a scary Halloween episode on of the radio show Mercury Theater On The Air. The episode was aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) on October 30th, 1938. The first two thirds of the 62-minute broadcast were presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion by Martians was currently in progress. Orson Welles’s scripted act was so convincing that the broadcast caused hysteria throughout the nation as several listeners believed that the nation was actually being invaded by Martians in a seemingly unstoppable attack.

A title Wells was catapulted into with the publication of the 1898 science fiction classic, The War of the Worlds. It was this new style of story that would bring about and create this brand new, exciting and often educational form of literature. It is The War of the Worlds that really epitomizes what science fiction is and what it should be. The enchanting but gruesome tale of Martian invasion became the beginning of the modern science fiction story and was the first ever story about life on other planets attacking the human race (a now very popular theme). Although this exclusive, appreciated and amusing style of writing was graced with instant success in its current form, it too, like any other style of writing changed with the times.

It is also a philosophical novel with many deep meanings underlying the shallow looking one-hundred-eighty-eight page book. The subject of this novel is Science Fiction and there are not many that can even compete with Wells in terms of how superior his word descriptions are. He simply does wonders with the imagination of the reader. Obviously the whole book is about the struggle mankind faces, but it is not always with aliens, they are actually more of a good way to represent what Wells really believed. He believed man is dominant, yet should remember how big the universe is and that the possibility of life far more intelligent than ours is very great.
