The Victorian Age

In the year 1819, May 24th a girl was born in Britain. The little girl was named Alexandrina Victoria, but people called her Victoria. Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, who was the fourth son of the reigning King of the United Kingdom, King George III. Victorias mother was Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. After the death of little Victorias father and grandfather in 1820 she was raised by her mother. On June 20th 1837 Victoria inherited the throne and became the queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. When Victoria became a queen, a new era begun and it was of course named after the new queen, just as many other eras in Britain are named after reigning kings or queens. The Georgian era and the Regency era had ended and the Victorian age had begun. An era that was characterized by peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence for Britain. An era where great writers such as Charles Dickens, the Brontë-sisters, Oscar Wilde and many others became famous. Some of them by achieving to publicize the social problems, such as poverty or peoples rights violations. Others by writing great novels and making more and more people read books in their spare time for fun.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens is one of the most famous Victorian novelists. He was born in Portsmouth in England, on February 7th, 1812. Dickens did not get alot of formal education, because he had to leave school and start working in a factory when his father went to prison. Despite that, Dickens wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas and alot of short stories and more. Few of his most famous works are Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol and Hard times. ...d as scandalous and immoral. Wilde then added a preface as he called it and six new chapters, and then people said that it was not as immoral anymore. The story is based on the myths of Narcissus and Faust. A young, handsome and intelligent man wishes to remain eternally like that. He makes a deal with the devil, and instead of the man aging, a portrait of him will age. And if he does something bad, it will only show in the picture to. In the end of the novel he gets enaugh and kills himself, but then the portrait goes back to normal and the man's body shows how old he really is, and all his sins are shown as well. The moral of the story is that if someone does something bad, but manages to hide it, it will later on come back at him. Nobody can excape his fate. In the story Wilde showed and used art, because he was fascinated by it and wanted it to be more visible.
