One out of three African-American women will become a victim of rape in their lifetime. (Starling, 1998) Rape is a subject that many people do not like to talk about and many incidents go unreported. Rape is put into three different categories; Date Rape, Marital Rape and Sexual Assault. Victims of rape are not subjected to just gender, race, or age group it happens to men, women, children, and the elderly. Many people do not realize the change in a person’s life after being raped or sexually assaulted. Rape victims experience emotional, psychological, and physical changes. What is rape? Rape is sex that you do not agree with, including forcing a body part or object in a person’s vagina, rectum, or mouth. They can occur among strangers or
An example would be if a man goes out on a date with a female, they have a great time and later decides that he wants to have sexual intercourse with her but she refuses, and he says that he doesn’t care and takes it anyway. These types of rapes are hard to prosecute because it’s usually he say she say , he can deny that it was rape and say that it was consensual, some women feel guilty , embarrassed, or in complete disbelief that it happened and they get of the evidence, or do not report the rape right away. Some women are even drugged and may not even remember what happened the night before. A common drug that is used for rape is Rohypnol. Most women do not report marital rape for various reasons; they may not want to lose their husband because he is the financial support, she doesn’t want to see her husband go to jail, they have kids, or simply because she feels like it would be a hard case to prove simply because they are married. The bottom line is rape is rape and it doesn’t matter if you are married if you say “no” and they insist it is rape. Marital rape doesn’t have to be abusive it can simply be him violating you in your sleep, and you wake up to unwanted intercourse that is still considered
