Even though distance learning has it's ups and downs, students are given the opportunity to better themselves by obtaining a college degree online, advancing in different career and technology fields, as well as tending to life's daily tasks all at the same time.
Students who choose distance learning experience victories as well as challenges just like any other student attending school. One of the best things about distance learning is that student's can work at their own pace in the privacy of their own home. “Distance education gives an opportunity to learn independent from time and place. The learners define self-pace learning” (Kiryakova, G. 2009).
Some would say that to be a good quality of distance learning, because even though students have deadlines to meet they are still able to learn and apply the material without as much pressure as a traditional school setting. “Distance education gives an opportunity to everyone to learn throughout their entire lifetime” (Kiryakova, G. 2009). Distance learning does not discriminate either. People of all ages, and even people who have not been in school in over a decade, will find comfort in online schooling. Distance learning is also very convenient for student's who have children, or who work crazy schedules. Student's have the option of taking class during all times of the day! In most cases distance learning is compared to a traditional classroom setting, to provide an option for student's who are interested in taking classes online and so that student's can know the difference, and adapt to the online experience. In his article, “Can You Be Education from a Distance?”, James Barszcz effectively weighs the pros and cons of online education compared to the traditional method, while effectively supporting his position with factual information and statistics. While distance education proves to be convenient for students, Barszcz asserts that it eliminates valuable experiences necessary in order to get the most out of the material being learned.
With technology continuously dominating society, it is with no surprise that students are using technology to earn their degree online. An increasing number of colleges and universities are offering degrees that can be earned entirely online. One study (http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED541571.pdf)page 17 indicated a total enrollment of 16,611,710 students in the Fall of 2002 and increasing to 20,994,113 in Fall 2011, with the trend in online enrollment continuing to rise.
As online learning continues to boost in popularity, more institutions of higher learning are focusing on a common occurrence practiced among universities and colleges offering online courses (Street, n. d.). There is significant growth in the online market because students working full time are the fastest growing part of the learner population and they bring commercial tuition dollars with them. It is estimated that five of six online students have some type of employment and would not be able to attend customary face-to-face classes (Thomas, 2001). The quantity of universities offering online education courses and the amount of students registering for online courses are on the rise.

Distance education as we know it materialized in the 1960s, and although it predominantly consisted as a self-directed learning method (correspondence courses, with textbooks and previously prepared lessons), it presented opportunities for the working populace to receive an education; however, it was also the foundation of an emerging issue which accompanied distance education and continued to adversely develop as time progressed, yet modern online learning has been enhanced by the theories of illustrious scholars. Theories of Transactional distance and Andragogy have influenced the technological expansion of distance education into the 21st century's streamlined, learner-centered environment.
This paper attempts to identify some of the challenges impeding the effective implementation of distance learning. It explain the characteristics of distance learning and how emerging technology can be effectively employ to bring about the desired learning outcomes among learners. In a K-12 setting, distance learning or traditional learning requires careful planning that must take place in order for the educational process to work for the students. When we look at both forms of education there are still pros and cons to both. Although online learning has made a major impact in the world of education, many people have not accepted this form of education. One of the reason for their concerns is that students cannot get fast answers to their questions about the assignment from the teacher. Another concern is that the students cannot perform effectively in a group collaboration that is taking place online. Also, students may not effectively do their homework from an online program. Many people think online education can be more expensive than a traditional school setting. Previous generations did not have the option for online learning experience, so why should we start now? An interesting point about online education is that LeBaron (2010) states, “The largest school in the U.S. is the University of Phoenix Online, with a whopping 380,232 students. That’s over 5x more than the largest public school, Arizona State University, which has 68,064 students” (para. 7).
