Imagine yourself walking down the sidewalk on your way to work or school when suddenly a black cat darts in front of your path. After your heart rate slows, you glance at your watch and realize it’s Friday the 13th! Do you begin to think about what bad luck you might face? For years people have associated Friday the 13th with bad luck, but when did this assumption begin? To get a better understanding of this superstitious day I will discuss three events from history that have occurred on Friday the 13th and you as a reader can decide whether it really is an unlucky day. One of the most widespread belief as to why Friday the 13th is an unlucky day goes all the way back to the biblical last supper. In attendance at the Last Supper were Jesus and his twelve disciples for a total of thirteen partakers “there were 13 people at the table (the Last Supper) and the 13th was Jesus” (DellaContrada).
