The Universe
Luminosity is the amount of light that is radiated from a star. White light is the composition of all colors. In elements, the energy discharge can be displayed as light. Just by looking at the colors that are discharged, one may precisely identify the element. In understanding the universe, the Doppler effect is one of the most important tools. The Doppler effect is a shift in frequency due to a moving source. Skipping a rock on water would be an example of this effect. The circles would be off center because the rock is a moving source. The wavelength is shorter when the rock is coming toward an individual. Also, the frequency will increase and the wave crests will shorten. When the source is moving away from an individual, the wavelength increases and the frequency decreases. This principle is identical with light.
In a rainbow, the longest wavelength is the red portion and the shortest wavelength is the violet portion. If a body is emitting light and it is approaching someone, we would say the radiation is blue shifted. A red shift, on the other hand, ocurs when the emitting object is receding, or when a spectrum is shifted to longer wavelengths. Hubble measured that the farther the distance of a galaxy is from us, the greater the red shift, which is Hubble's law. In fact, galaxies possibly could be receding from us as fast as the speed of light. The greater the distance of a galaxy, the greater its velocity. ... about what happened before the Big Bang. maybe the universe was created out of the collapse of a previous universe. Maybe black holes suck everything in, and then when there is nothing left perhaps it just pushes everything out. Maybe the Heat Death fluctuation model is correct and we live in a universe out there or maybe our universe supercooled and expanded. We do not know a lot. We do not even know if a quark is the smallest particle. Maybe the uncertainty principle keeps the universe apart. Black holes stretch the fabric of time to an infinite extent, tearing a hole in space time. What happens at the tear? Some say at the tend of a black hole some of the matter decreases because it loses energy through its jets and tears, creating litle bubbles. The little bubbles could be the universes. With science, we will never be able to answer why we are here.
In many theories that come into the light in the scientific field, there are always gaps, there are always issues within each that have no explanation to them. For example, the big bang theory, this is a theory that attempts to explain how the universe was created. This theory states that the universe began as a very small, dense, and hot ball (Imagine the universe all put into a ball the size of a pen tip) with no stars or atoms. This ball then expanded incredibly quickly. The universe was then formed as the way it is now. Personally, I feel as if this theory has a major hole that prevents me from believing it is possible. This hole is, “What exactly put this ball into motion in the first place?”
The origins of the super-massive black holes which concludes how they were formed and what caused them to form is an unsolved problem which is yet a mystery of astrophysics. ( Millis 2014)
A spectrometer is used to measure the movement of distant galaxies. The spectrometer can measure the type of atoms the light was produced from, how bright the light is, and if the light is stretched or compressed. The measurements obtained with spectrometers show that distant galaxies are moving away from earth and the more distant the galaxy the faster it is moving away form earth. There are stars known as “Cepheid variables” which change in brightness relative to the distance from the viewer. The distance if these stars can be determined from the brightness that is observed. Truth is in the eye of the beholder. Or is it? Questions regarding the nature of truth have always been central to not only philosophers, but all men (and women, of course) who possess any desire for knowledge. A person who is lacking a basic understanding of truth can never fully grasp the fine distinction between appearance and reality, yet the ability to separate the two is essential to anyone interested in knowledge at a higher level, where appearances lead only to dead ends. Or do they? And who says appearance is not reality? At the heart of this matter is the conflict between truth as an absolute and the truth of the senses; while this may seem like a trivial matter (truth is true, isn't it?), it is anything but.
This book is about a girl name Hattie Owen; she lives in a boarding house with her parents and the other borders. Hattie Owens turned 12 years old and her life just turned upside down. Her uncle has returned home for the first time in 10 years. Hattie has never met her uncle in her life. Hattie s a very shy girl and she feels more comfortable around adults, when her uncle has just shown up she is excited. Hattie is curious as to why she never knew that Adam existed. One day Hattie stands up to a guy who calls Adam a “freak” because he a disorder.
Astronomers are able to specify how much the universe is expanding by measuring this redshift from the spectrum of the supernova. By studying many supernova at different distances, astronomers can piece together a history of the expansion of the Universe. This expansion gave the astronomers the evidence that there is dark energy out there that cause the universe to expand.
Part I: The Edge of Knowledge Chapter 1: Tied Up with Strings This is the introductory section, where the author, Brian Greene, examines the fundamentals of what is currently proven to be true by experimentation in the realm of modern physics. Green goes on to talk more about "The Basic Idea" of string theory. He describes how physicists are aspiring to reach the Theory of Everything, or T.O.E. Some suspect when string theory is completely understood that it might turn out to become the T.O.E.Part II: The Dilemma of Space, Time, and Quanta Chapter 2: Space, Time, and the Eye of the Beholder In the chapter, Greene describes how Albert Einstein solved the paradox about light. In the mid-1800's James Maxwell succeeded in showing that light was actually an electromagnetic wave.
It all started 13.7 billion years ago in the core of a black hole which contains large amounts of gravitational pressure which can squish very fine particles. After the big bang happened the universe eventually cooled and expanded. Every day the universe expands, so trying to find the end will be impossible. Our universe is similar to filling a balloon with air until expands, while keeping all of its contents inside.
Frankenstein was written by a woman named Mary Shelley. This story is considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Mary Shelley did not have a good life. There were always bad events occurring in Shelley’s life. Before the age of 30, Mary Shelley had lost her mother, sister, father, husband, and three of her four children. She battled depression all of her life and finally died in London at the age of fifty-four. After all of these terrible things that happened to her, people can probably understand how she came up with such a horror story like Frankenstein. In this novel, the main character is Victor Frankenstein. After Victor mother dies, he leaves and goes to England. In England is where he created this monster that he soon regrets. Victor abandons the creature, and the creature makes it his duty to find his creator and wreak havoc along the way. This horrifying sci-fi story could only be written and told by Mary Shelley, an individual that had such a horrible life.
The Big Bang theory is a theory that states that the universe originated as a single mass, which subsequently exploded. The entire universe was once all in a hot and dense ball, but about 20 million years ago, it exploded. This explosion hurled material all over the place and all mater and space was created at that point in time. The gas that was hurled out cooled and became our stellar system. A red shift is a shift towards longer wavelengths of celestial objects. An example of this is the "Doppler shift." Doppler shift is what makes a car sound lower-pitched as it moves further away. As it turns out, a special version of this everyday life effect applies to light as well. If an astronomical object is moving away from the Earth, its light will be shifted to longer (red) wavelengths. This is significant because this theory indicates the speed of recession of galaxies and the distances between galaxies.
Isha Judd once said, “Say yes to changes, to surprises, and to unexpected events; you will start to appreciate the perfection within everything.” In Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven, this quote seems to sum up Libby and Jack’s life after everything they’ve gone through. Libby, an overweight girl, only wanted to get through the torments of highschool, while Jack, a popular boy with a secret disease called prosopagnosia, or face blindness, wanted to keep up his facade; they never thought that, through a slight altercation, they would end up having anything to do with each other, and especially nothing more. These intriguing characters, an unpredictable plot, tied together with a lasting theme all make this the best book you would ever read.
Most people would agree with Churchill, not even relay thinking about what he wanted to express with his statement. Do we really have control over our 'own universe', or is the real difference between a life under control and a life out of control just the point of view, moreover our thoughts? Can we change our reality just by changing our way of thinking, our way of seeing the world? According to Quantum Physics, it is believed that a persons thoughts create an energy which attracts what the person is thinking.
Most scientists agree that there was a beginning but there is a lot of speculation of how it (the universe) actually started. The much-celebrated Greek philosopher, Aristotle, denied the fact that there ever was a beginning. He and his associates believed in the eternal existence of the universe, they also tried to prove that the universe was static, and was unchanging in time. However, there is evidence, which suggests that the universe is changing with time.
